Have you ever had a "bad dream?" In Chapter 2 of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar had a bad dream - a nightmare that he didn't like and couldn't understand. How do you stay faithful in a hostile culture? In Daniel 1, a young exile in pagan Babylon resolves not to defile himself, even under pressure to conform. In this sermon, Dr. Toby Holt shows how Daniel lived as a faithful "stranger in a strange land" — and how we can too.

Have you ever been angry with God?

Was the great fish God's judgment or His rescue?

In Jonah 2, Jonah prays from inside the belly of a great fish. Dr. Toby Holt asks whether that fish was God's punishment — or His surprising means of rescue.

Having fled from God and been thrown into the sea, Jonah should have drowned. Instead, God sends a great fish to swallow him — not to destroy, but to save. God sometimes uses dreadful circumstances to bring a stubborn heart to repentance. From the darkness, Jonah remembers the Lord, turns from idols, and declares: "Salvation is of the LORD."

1. Was the fish judgment or mercy? It was mercy. The fish was God's means of rescuing Jonah from drowning and bringing him to repentance.

Should we soften the gospel to make it easier to accept?

No. In Romans 1:16, the Apostle Paul declares, "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ." In this Reformation Sunday sermon, Dr. Toby Holt calls the church to proclaim the gospel boldly and unashamedly, without watering it down.

Philosophy and theology are not the same thing. One looks inward, one looks upward. As a Christian, you need to consider the sources that are instructing you and your loved ones.
