  • Tennis With An Accent: Tennis Blogger Paul Timmons
The war between the ITF and the ATP is felt less at the major tournaments than in the lower tiers of professional tennis. This is a very complicated subject, and a single conversation won’t resolve all of its problems, but Tennis With An Accent wants to begin this conversation and continue it over the course of 2019.
The new Tennis With An Accent Podcast welcomes tennis blogger Paul Timmons, who writes about the ITF Transition Tour, the Challenger tours, junior tennis, futures tennis, and more at his website, My Tennis Adventures. A few weeks ago, Paul began a series of continuing posts on the ITF Transition Tour. The first post in his extended series is here. We encourage you to read this post, because it deals with many of the topics Paul examines with podcast host Saqib Ali on this week’s show.
What are the positive aspects of the recent changes to the structure of lower-tier tennis tournaments? Paul offers one example. Find out how many more examples he provides. The length of his list might surprise you. It might not.
The details surrounding junior tennis, Challenger-level tennis, and the $15,000 or $25,000 tournaments on the calendar are numerous and complicated. Paul explains why these changes are significant. The prism through which Paul filters his analysis is the larger financial outlook for tennis players. What level of opportunity is tennis providing to 19-year-old players from less developed countries who don’t have the backing of a large national federation or a private agency? What level of opportunity is tennis providing to players who are outside the top 100 of the junior ranks? What level of opportunity is tennis providing to players in their mid-20s who spend many years of their careers slugging it out in the minor leagues, and are looking for that one breakthrough? What level of opportunity is tennis providing to a wide range of players in various and equally complicated circumstances?
Paul Timmons offers answers to these urgent questions in the new Tennis With An Accent Podcast.
Follow Paul’s blog, My Tennis Adventures for continuing coverage and analysis of the ITF Transition Tour and the many levels of tennis which exist below the main ATP Tour and the major tournaments.

  • Ian Beckles’ Flava In Ya Ear: Race Issues In America
This week on Flava In Ya Ear, Ian Beckles is concerned about the state of the country as it sits. The issues going on concerning race are troubling. We are living in a day where a woman running for President is accused of not being “black enough” and where a gay, black actor who was attacked is being doubted. For as much as we are progressing as a country, we sure as Hell are regressing as well.
Donald Trump is on the verge of declaring a national emergency in order to get his border wall built. We’ve had one government shutdown. We’re possibly facing a second. That’s the real issue he should be concerned with. If President Trump thinks the wall is going to stop crime or drugs from entering the country, he has another thing coming. Ian elaborates on why Trump is insane, citing the El Chapo trial and how he trafficked drugs into the country.
Ian thinks we are going to look back in 20 years on the Trump regime and question ourselves as to what we were thinking and how we survived.

  • Duffified Live: The Mystery Of Duffy’s Cut
A few years ago, my father told me the story of “Duffy’s Cut,” a wild tale of corruption, hidden documents, murder, and the blatant mistreatment of the Irish and what it was like in the 1830s. My father was an avid reader and LOVED history so it was fitting that he would get involved in the story of “Duffy’s Cut” while he was working on his 5th degree, this one was his Doctorate and he was doing it at Immaculata University in the western suburbs of Philadelphia.
Today, I get to speak to William Watson of Immaculata College and Joe Modestine of Doylestown Brewery. William is the author and historian for the entire project while Joe has brewed a beer that is raising money that will assist in the exhuming of the remaining fifty bodies that are buried in this mass grave.
Duffy’s Cut is the name given to a stretch of railroad tracks about 30 miles west of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania originally built for the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad, which later became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Main Line. In June 1832, a contractor and fellow Irishman named Philip Duffy hired a group of 57 Irish immigrants to lay this line through the area’s densely wooded hills and ravines.
The workers came to Philadelphia from the Ulster counties of Donegal, Tyrone, and Derry to work in Pennsylvania’s developing railroad industry. Less than two months after their arrival, all 57 are believed to have died during the second cholera pandemic. While most died of the disease, forensic evidence suggests that some may have been murdered, perhaps due to fear of cholera in the area and surrounding counties. They were buried anonymously in a ditch outside of Malvern.
The Duffy’s Cut Project began undergoing archaeological excavation in August of 2004 by a research team headed by Dr William Watson from Immaculata University, Rev. Dr Frank Watson, Earl Schandelmeier and John Ahtes (who passed away in 2010). The team took on the momentous task of archival and archaeological search into the life and death of the forgotten men of Duffy’s Cut. Seeking to provide insight into early 19th Century attitudes about industry, immigration, and disease in Pennsylvania. On March 20, 2009, the first human bones were unearthed, consisting of two skulls, six teeth and eighty other bones.
