We talk with Jermaine Carey, Youth Coordinator for the Muslim Center in Detroit, Mi about the character of a friend (and mentor) of his who was killed by Detroit Police during an early morning entry into his home. The Police have issued a press release stating that it was a mistake, but little has been released officially regarding the incident. ,Jermaine sheds light into the kind of man Brother Abdullah was and stresses the importance of keeping his memory alive and not allowing his name to be tarnished.
In the second half Tariq offers commentary on the killing of Botham Jean, an African American man who was killed by off-duty Dallas Police officer Amber Guyger, who claims that she confused Jean's apartment with her own and upon entry found a dark silhouetted figure before her, gave him orders which were not complied with and fired her weapon. Tariq's commentary centers around the speed of the news cycle and the need for us to invest the attention needed to solve problems of injustice and racism.
We close out with the Jobs report.
