Naoimh is joined by Kimberlee Woo Ling, a young doctor from Trinidad and Tobago now working in Liverpool, who was a medical student in Belfast when a missionary rang her at ten o’clock one Thursday night with a free place on a women’s retreat in Donegal the next day. She tells what a priest said to her in confession that weekend, and of something during the final Mass that her medical training still can’t explain. Back home that Christmas, a chance meeting outside an adoration chapel led to an evening for young people organised on two days’ notice, and Kimberlee has the numbers on how many turned up.

He traces how Newman’s view of the Irish changed after his conversion, and reads from Loss and Gain, his novel about an Oxford student who reaches the Catholic Church without meeting a single Catholic, including a dinner-table argument that collapses in laughter at an Irish bull. He closes with Newman’s description of the young man’s first experience of Catholic worship, in a plain, unfinished church crowded with people of every class.

In the week St Francis marked 800 years in heaven, Fr Peter George Flynn tells the story of San Damiano, the ruined church halfway down the hill from Assisi where Christ spoke to Francis from the cross. Francis went round begging for stones rather than bread, predicted a convent of holy ladies before he had thought of founding any friars, and later the Poor Clares had their first home there. Fr Peter also explains how the church was confiscated by the Kingdom of Italy and then rescued by an Anglican viceroy of India, before reading the famous crucifix figure by figure, including a centurion whose raised fingers carry a small lesson in theology.

He also explains why he prays for the souls of a famine village that once stood in the fields near his home, and the pair close by praying the Litany of the Precious Blood together for listeners.
