Socialist have a way of painting a very attractive picture. However, reality soon enters. “Paradise on earth” and “the fountain of youth” are not in God’s plan. Neither are the abolition of private property and imposition of a government-controlled economy, two keys to socialism. Instead, Pope Leo XIII in Rerum Novarum explains that man has a right to remuneration reflective of his strength and skill. Furthermore, that compensation remains his and he is free to do with it as he sees fit – including converting his money into some form of private property. It cannot be commandeered by the state and redistributed. Furthermore, government systems are not about either complete control (socialism), or no control, but rather about “sustaining the conditions under which individuals and firms produce goods and services.”* Let Christian charity abound with a greater appreciation of God’s loving providence.
