In 1978, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn began his commencement speech at Harvard to a standing ovation. Before he had finished, many of the elite wished he had never come! He explained that the West’s affluence and relative comfort was “whittling away” the courage needed to pursue virtue – the only thing that can make us happy. The problem persists today, however. Part of the trouble lies in the fact that man has put God aside while he looks for the false oasis offered by material goods. Unfortunately, the consequence is that the true, the good and the beautiful are less easily found and modern man is burdened by anxiety and depression. God is necessary to man, necessary to save us from sin. We need grace to desire and practice the virtues. We need to pray and receive the sacraments.
