President Trump is being lauded for the good work he is rapidly pursuing. He is enabled in this work by his relative honesty. Trump is more interested in the common good than was his predecessor. He sees more clearly root causes and their bad fruits, and he is less swayed by powerful influencers. Perhaps similarly, Church leadership is challenged today. Abp. Charles Chaput assesses the work of Pope Francis and his right-hand man, Cdl. Fernandez. On one hand, he observes that their closeness with the poor has given them a greater sensitivity to their needs, needs that many in Western nations have difficulty perceiving as clearly. On the other, their understanding is incomplete and misleads them in serious ways, producing works that are harmful to the Church. Charity, the good archbishop argues, goes beyond the material needs of our brothers and sisters. It is firstly about “helping others live in union with God”.* Therefore, it must include fraternal correction. “The heart has its reasons, which reason does not know,” said Blaise Pascal. However, Abp Chaput notes, sometimes the heart is wrong. (* “Cardinal Fernandez Misleads”, First Things, 1 Apr 2024)
