John Lennon’s “Imagine” was the concluding moment at President Jimmy Carter’s funeral. Carter, widely known to be a Christian, celebrates meeting his Maker at last with a song that begins: “Imagine there is no heaven…”. Really? Msgr. Richard C. Antall says this belays a profound “intellectual bankruptcy” in the world today. Are we aware of this bankruptcy? Ought we care? Would we care more or less if our cab driver or pilot were drunk when we climbed on board? Of course we do care. But we must stop climbing aboard after smelling the alcohol! We can tell Mr. Lennon that our own childhood spats with brothers and sisters spontaneously happened without any knowledge of God. Furthermore, we could counsel Mr. Lennon, that denying God will not bring the peace he hope’s for. Rather, this is the very reason Jesus Christ died on the cross for us – that we may have life and have it abundantly!
