The story of Job has been re-told for 4000 years. Why? It is because the problem of evil and God’s justice is made visible. However, this mystery of good and evil is revealed to us through Job’s extraordinary suffering – including at the hands of friends. In the end, God rebukes Job, and what he plans for Job’s friends is not good. However, Job, of whom God says because of his righteousness “there is none like him on earth”, is humbled. This speaks more about God’s greatness than it does of Job’s pride! And it is here where our opportunity resides when we suffer. As with Job, our suffering is an opportunity to enter into an intimate relationship with God. And when we do, when we accept our finite abilities to do anything good, it is then that God blesses us in ways that neither Job, nor we can ever imagine!
