Socialism, newly in-vogue with the election of Mayor Mamdani in New York City, is not able to do what its proponents hope for.  It is another promise like the Tower of Babel.  Never mind that now, in its latest revision – ‘democratic socialism’ – it is imagined to overcome the calamitous failures resulting in millions of deaths in the last century.  Socialism has been condemned since the time of Marx’s Communist Manifesto and is still condemned today.  Why?  Because it imagines doing the good that Christians are called to do, but doing it without loving God or the rights with which he endows us.  Respect for the rights of the person given by God and the grace offered by Christ are necessary to do the good.  They cannot be substituted, no matter how nicely those supposed alternatives are described.
