When one considers the vast apparatus of the Church and her priests, we may be tempted to believe that the work of spreading the Good News is primarily theirs to do. However, imagine if the early Church would have looked to the 12 Apostles in this way: ‘Your job; wish I were better able to help.’ Pope St. John Paul II has invited us to a “New Evangelization”. This is only possible through the gift of the Holy Spirit. However, we have been given this gift in baptism and more fully in confirmation. Furthermore, John the Baptist talks about this baptism, but also about “fire”! Without the Holy Spirit, the New Evangelization is “mission impossible.” With Him, however, we are able to heal blindness, liberate captives, free the oppressed, and bring glad tidings to the poor! Let us stir this Spirit into flame!
