Did the Prodigal son’s older brother miss an opportunity? He felt as if he had “served” his father and obeyed his “commands”. Did he not think of himself as heir to the vineyard? In his mind, was he more servant or orphan? How do we see ourselves in God’s vineyard? Are we beloved sons and daughters, attending to everything with the eyes of our Father and acting for the good of the Vineyard? Or, are we orphans? Would our answer change if we better recognized ourselves as God’s temple, temples of the Holy Spirit? From Scripture, we understand there are four marks of God’s temple: Temples are gateways to an open heaven. There we hear the voice of God. Angels are there and assisting those present. And finally, the works produced by God through his temple bring amazement. Let us recognize that we are temples of the Holy Spirit “and preach as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons “. (Mt 10: 7-8)
