  • Ministry of education plans to attract more Ukrainian teachers and assistants to Czech schools
    According to unofficial data, there could up to ten thousand teachers and teaching assistants among Ukrainian refugees in Czechia. However, only between one to two thousand of them are actually working in Czech schools at the moment. The Ministry of Education plans to earmark more finances to support their integration and, at the same time, help Czech schools, which are facing a serious lack of teachers.

  • Sunflowers of Hope project seeks to create “library of emotional messages” for Ukraine
    Sunflowers of Hope is the name of a new project launched in cooperation with Prague City Hall and the city’s Ukrainian Embassy. Using Ukraine’s national flower as a symbol, it seeks to combine financial donations with messages of emotional support. The project is the brainchild of the Czech branch of global advertising agency Dentsu. I asked the company’s creative director for Czechia, Troy Palmer, how exactly it works.

  • Petr Jákl: Jan Žižka movie is “Braveheart about a Czech hero”
    This week sees the long anticipated premiere of the most expensive Czech film in history. Medieval, or Jan Žižka as the film is being marketed in Czechia, cost around 450 million crowns and stars actors such as Michael Caine, Ben Foster and Til Schweiger. It focuses on the early life of the famous Czech Hussite general, who was known for his innovative tactics.  The movie was written, directed and produced by Petr Jákl, a former Czech judo international and stuntman. I caught up with him and began by asking why he felt that the character of Jan Žižka deserved a film.

  • Archaeologists in Prague uncover ancient Neolithic structure
    Archaeologists in Prague are currently uncovering a monumental building from the Stone Age. The so-called roundel, built around 7,000 years ago, is located in the district of Vinoř on the outskirts of the city. Experts are hoping that the research will reveal more information about these mysterious ancient structures.
