  • George of Poděbrady - diplomat king who dreamed of a united Europe
Though little known outside the Czech Republic, the 15th century King of
Bohemia George of Poděbrady (Jiří z Poděbrad) is seen by many today as
an accomplished administrator and one of the first political figures to
propose the idea of European unity. On the occasion of the 600th
anniversary of his birth, we will look closer at the life and legacy of the
only Hussite king to ever rule the Czech lands.

  • Czech adventurers spend coronavirus lockdown in Caribbean
While most Czechs are currently confined to their apartments, due to the
coronavirus lockdown, two adventurers from East Bohemia have been
“forced” to spend their quarantine on their sailing boat in the
Caribbean. They are hoping to continue on their journey around the world as
soon as the anti-coronavirus measures are lifted or relaxed.

The fight against COVID-19 has affected the life of millions of Czechs. As

  • Czech Holocaust victims remembered in online public reading
Czechs are marking international Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom HaShoah,
which falls on Tuesday, with the annual public reading of the Holocaust
victims’ names. The event, which traditionally takes place at synagogues
or public gatherings around country, went on-line this year due to the
restrictions related to the coronavirus outbreak. The event got underway at
2 p.m. on Tuesday on the website of the Terezín Initiative Institute. I
discussed the details with its director, Tereza Štěpková:

  • Czechs embrace the face mask as a fashion item
The Czech Republic was one of the first countries where people were obliged
to wear face masks in public. A month later, the face mask has become an
accepted part of one’s attire and even a fashion accessory. Czechs have
come together to help each other out in sewing and distributing masks
which, in defiance of the doom and gloom surrounding the pandemic, have
become brighter and more colourful with every passing day.

  • Tomáš Etzler: In China they have everything – but the oppression is more brutal than we had in Czechoslovakia
Few if any Czechs are more familiar with China than Tomáš Etzler, who was
Czech TV’s correspondent there from 2006 to 2014. When we spoke, Etzler
told me that right now we only know the tip of the iceberg of China’s
mishandling of the coronavirus. But before turning to what the Covid-19
pandemic will mean for China’s international standing, we discussed the
journalist’s own fascinating life. It has included spells as an immigrant
in the US and reporting from conflict zones for CNN.

  • Anti-coronavirus measures hit Czech drug addicts, hinder outreach efforts
The closing of international borders to contain the novel coronavirus has
taken a heavy toll on businesses of all kinds – including the illegal
drug trade. As a result, official say, the price of highly addictive drugs
such as heroin and crystal meth have shot up. While shortages can compel
hardcore users to seek treatment, state of emergency measures are
    complicating outreach efforts.
