  • Artists That Never Give Up project part of new Czech Center New York online focus
With New York reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, the city’s Czech
Center is now reaching the public online. As part of this new focus, it has
created a series of interviews with well-known Czech figures in the city
entitled Artists That Never Give Up in the City That Never Sleeps – and
those interviews will also be appearing on Radio Prague International’s
website in the coming days. I discussed the project with Czech Center New
    York director Miroslav Konvalina.

  • Daniel Prokop: Czech populists are primarily focused on “the enemy within”
In his new book Slepé skvrny (Blind Spots), sociologist Daniel Prokop
offers illuminating perspectives on various aspects of today’s Czech
Republic. This makes the Charles University academic the perfect person
with whom to discuss issues such as the connections between pay level and
political outlook and between social mobility and education – and how the
coronavirus crisis is likely to affect the country’s worst off. But our
    conversation begins with Czech populism.

  • The #MeToo movement and the Czech Republic
How do Czechs feel about #MeToo, the movement against sexual harassment and
assault which has brought related crimes into international public
discourse in recent years? And how open is Czech society towards victims
who decide to come out with their stories? That is what we will explore in
this part of Radio Prague International’s series focusing on the issues
    Czech women face today.

  • Prague Zoo announces birth of elephant calf
Amid the doom and gloom of the coronavirus epidemic, Prague Zoo has
announced a piece of good news: the birth of an elephant calf. The zoo
closed its doors to visitors ten days ago, but it is promising fans videos
and regular reports on the newcomer.

  • Economist Tomáš Sedláček: A positive look at the coronavirus crisis
The economy should be put in neutral gear and people should take a break.
That is the key recommendation of Czech economist Tomáš Sedláček for
the coming weeks. He is the author of the much-celebrated bestseller
Economics of Good and Evil, was the youngest advisor to the former Czech
President Václav Havel and is a member of several prestigious
international institutions. (Tomáš Sedláček spoke to Vít Pohanka about
the impact the crisis has already had on our use of digital technology):

  • Flag expert: Czechs only bring out their flag in emotional times
The national flag of the Czech Republic, which is the same as the flag of
former Czechoslovakia, will celebrate its centenary on March 30th. While
the celebrations of the centenary of Czechoslovakia were grandiose, the
flag’s golden anniversary is likely to pass largely unnoticed,
overshadowed by the coronavirus crisis and other concerns. I spoke to the
country’s leading vexillologist Aleš Brožek about how the flag was
selected, why Czechs only bring it out in turbulent times and how to
prevent hoisting it the wrong way round. I began by asking him how the flag
    was selected.

  • Czech artists boost public morale during quarantine period
Czech artists and people from the cultural sphere have been looking for
ways to boost public morale in the face of the coronavirus epidemic. Those
artists who saw their concerts cancelled are streaming them from their
homes, actors have recorded video spots broadcast on television telling
people not to lose faith, while galleries are offering viewings of their
exhibitions online to the millions stuck at home for an unspecified period
    of time.

  • Why Chinese masks destined for Italy were seized (not ‘stolen’) by Czech authorities
In times of war, it is often said, truth is the first casualty. In the
midst of the battle to contain the coronavirus, Czech authorities during a
    customs
raid last Tuesday mistakenly seized 101,600 facemasks gifted by a branch of
    the Red
Cross in eastern China to a Chinese community in Italy. Although Czech
officials apologized for the mix-up, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica on
Sunday published a bogus article claiming the Czech state had “stolen”
that shipment – and much more.
