  • Czech agencies smash spy ring operated by “very aggressive” Russians
Last year the Czech authorities broke up a Russian spy network operating in
the country, the head of the BIS counter-intelligence service, Michal
Koudelka, told MPs on Monday. The FSB spy ring – financed directly by
Moscow and the Russian Embassy – was uncovered by BIS and the Czech
Republic’s national organised crime unit. I discussed the revelation with
former Czech Military Intelligence chief Andor Šándor.

  • Jan Rubeš: On the revolution, the Stones, Zappa – and Dallas
Czechoslovakia’s new-found freedom was underlined in August 1990 by a
concert at Prague’s Strahov Stadium by the Rolling Stones, who became the
first major Western band to perform in the country. In a now famous video
message broadcast before the gig, Mick Jagger told fans – in Czech –
“the Stones are rolling to Prague”. The man who taught the rock star
the phrase was Jan Rubeš. A Czechoslovak TV employee in those years, he
later brought shows such as Dallas and The Simpsons to the country’s TV
screens. When I spoke to Rubeš, who now works in film and TV distribution,
I asked what he had been doing this time 30 years ago.

  • Czech companies dominate Deloitte’s Central European tech ranking
Despite the country’s recent fall in the World Economic Forum’s global
competitiveness report, Czech technology start-ups seem to dominate in the
Central European region. At least according to the latest ranking published
by the accountancy firm Deloitte on Thursday, which placed 19 Czech
businesses among its list of the top 50 home-grown technology companies in
    Central Europe.

Celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution are
taking place not only in the Czech Republic but also among Czech and Slovak
communities abroad. The Czech consulate in Chicago has prepared several
events highlighting the 30 years of freedom, including a showcase of photos
by the award-winning photographer Karel Cudlín.

  • From church reliefs and postcards to anti-Zionist caricatures - peculiar forms of visual anti-Semitism in Czech history
Anti-Jewish sentiment was often fuelled by vicious and clichéd imagery.
Just how varied and inventive these forms of depiction could be was a theme
recently explored at an international conference in Prague. It showed that
while more latent than in neighbouring states such as Germany, anti-Semitic
imagery was present in Czech history, often in especially curious
    depictions.

  • Kafka’s sketchbook among documents reclaimed and digitalised by Israeli library
The National Library of Israel has started digitising a long-lost batch of
archival materials, belonging to Franz Kafka’s friend Max Brod. They
include, among other things, Kafka’s personal diary and a notebook in
which he practiced Hebrew. Israel received the missing documents from a
Swiss bank in August after years of international searches and legal
    disputes over the author’s legacy.

  • Century-old Prague meteorological column restored to former glory
A meteorological column erected on the Prague square Vítězné náměstí
in 1914 has just been restored. It is one of only two remaining such
columns in the Czech capital, though in the past they were a common sight
in the city and indeed throughout the country. I discussed the restoration
job and more with Eva Heyd of the Czech National Trust, who initiated the
    project.
