  • Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk: An inspiration for our own time
We start this series with one of the great European democrats of the 20th
century, Czechoslovakia’s first president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Born
in 1850, he was already in his late sixties when he became president in
November 1918. He took inspiration from the western democracies, in
particular the United States and Britain, having spent time in both
countries during his First World War exile. But he was also a passionate
    European.

  • New debate erupts over use of -ová suffix in Czech female surnames
Should Czech women be able to choose whether or not to use the ending -ová
in their surname? A debate over the question has flared up again after the
cabinet approved a draft law on birth registers, which denies women the
possibility to do so. The Pirate Party calls it discriminatory and wants to

One of Czech Radio’s leading charity projects is in aid of the blind and
visually impaired. Established in 2003, Světluška, or Firefly, annually

impaired eyesight, not just to help them cope, but to enjoy life to the
full. At the same time it raises public awareness of the problem giving the
sighted a chance to find out what it is like to manage daily activities

The Czech Republic’s Věra Jourová, responsible for Justice, Consumers

return to Brussels in a new role and with a higher status. If her candidacy

“rule-of-law” portfolio with the next EU Commissioner for Justice.

  • “One of a kind” day of events to draw fresh attention to marriage equality bill
An international conference on marriage equality will take place at the
Czech Senate on Thursday, followed by a demonstration in support of the
issue nearby. Organisers We Are Fair! are hoping those events will focus
fresh attention on a bill, submitted well over a year ago, that would make
the Czech Republic the first ex-Eastern Bloc state to permit same-sex
marriage. I discussed the reasons the legislation has yet to make it
through the first reading with Adéla Horáková, a lawyer with We Are
    Fair!
