  • “Masaryk really liked the idea”: Czech YMCA members on organisation’s past and present
A major celebration of the 175th anniversary of the YMCA gets underway in
London next Sunday and among those in attendance will be a delegation from
the Czech Republic. How long has the YMCA been active in this part of the
world? And do members need to be Christian? Those are just a couple of the
questions I put to two young members, Vladi Vidláková and Nina
Hustedová, shortly before they left for the UK. But I first asked
Vidláková how she had got involved with the YMCA.

  • Krajané: Draft law eases path to Czech citizenship for descendants of exiles, emigres stripped of it
The Senate has passed a draft law that would make it easier for the
children and grandchildren of exiles from Communist Czechoslovakia to
obtain Czech citizenship. The bill, which is expected to be signed into law
by the president, pertains to descendants of those stripped of their own
citizenship prior to 1989. ‘Krajané’ – Czech compatriots and their
descendants – have long lobbied for the move, and hundreds are expected
    to apply.

  • Czechs can expect to live longer, but not in good health
As elsewhere in the developed world, the average life expectancy for Czech
men and women has been growing, but the sad news is that they are not
spending their old age in good health. The Czech Health Ministry is ringing
alarm bells and focussing on campaigns that will raise awareness of the
health risks responsible for serious illnesses in the aging population.

  • A legend set in stone: Šemík the talking horse, saviour of Sir Horymír
In days of yore, when the greedy pagan Prince Křesomysl reigned over the
Czech lands from the ancient Prague castle at Vyšehrad, he forced peasants
to abandon their villages and fields to pan for gold and mine for silver to
fill the royal coffers. With famine looming – so the legend goes – a
knight named Horymír tried to reason with the prince, but his pleas fell
on deaf ears. What’s more, miners torched the knight’s estate, setting
off a cycle of revenge. And Horymír would have been beheaded – if not
for his noble steed, Šemík. The white horse is said to be buried in the
    south Bohemian town of Neumětely.

  • Czech docu-film ‘Ticket to the Moon’ sheds light on universal aspirations across Cold War divides
In the early days of space travel, years before the Apollo 11 mission, an
Austrian journalist walked into a travel office in Vienna asking to reserve
a flight to the Moon. Pan American Airways took his reservation, launching
what would years later become the carrier’s ‘First Moon Flights
Club’. Among the nearly 100,000 people who joined it was the grandfather
of Czech documentary film producer Veronika Janatková. Her directorial
debut, ‘Ticket to the Moon’, offers a unique perspective on universal
longings across the divide of the Iron Curtain, against the backdrop of the
Space Race, and in the aftermath of the Soviet-led invasion of
    Czechoslovakia.

  • More protection for Prague’s Lennon wall after tourist agencies organise spray painting
Prague’s John Lennon wall will become more actively protected. In
response to a recent practice of tourist agencies that let visitors spray
paint the surface, the Sovereign Millitary Order of Malta, which owns the
famous sight, has decided to press charges. A special meeting between
representatives of Prague 1, the order and local residents on Tuesday
agreed to a new system of administering the wall.
