Czech Radio’s international broadcasting service was once one of the main sources of information about Czechoslovakia abroad, and it annually received thousands of letters from listeners the world over. A portion of this rich, multilingual archive, currently on display in the foyer of Czech Radio, reflects the tragic events of 1968.

As the country counts the costs of prolonged drought, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) has announced the revival of the National Anti-Drought Coalition, which had been dormant for several years. He is promising fast, targeted action, but questions remain over the actual road map and funding.

An exhibition at the Klementinum in Prague, From the Shadows to the Light, now looks at what happened to these books and the efforts to uncover their stories.

This week’s solar eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower once again drew Czechs outside to look at the sky. They also highlighted something unusual about the country: Czechia has one of the densest networks of public observatories and planetariums in Central Europe. Its roots stretch from the astronomers of Rudolf II’s Prague through the rise of amateur astronomy and communist-era “people’s observatories” to today’s European space programme.
