: The Substitutionary Passion and Great Commission of the King: Matthew 26–28 Exposition

The grand architectural narrative of the first Gospel reaches its victorious climax in the final three chapters. In this third and final session of our Matthew trilogy for Technical Thursday with Rocky Stevenson, we transition from the King’s authoritative, constitutional teaching to His ultimate sacrificial work: His substitutionary Passion, His glorious Resurrection, and His universal Commission in Matthew 26–28.

Our exposition traces the dark shadows of Gethsemane, the covenantal reality of the Lord's Supper in Matthew 26:27–28, and the agonizing victory of the cross in Matthew 27:46. We examine the profound temple and cosmic disruptions of the crucifixion, such as the torn veil in Matthew 27:51, which signals the legal inauguration of the New Covenant. Finally, we unpack the breathtaking resurrection in Matthew 28:5–6 and the cosmic, sovereign claim of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18–20. Rather than leaving His church with a distant moral code, the risen King—Immanuel, "God with us"—pledges His permanent presence to sustain His people as they make disciples of all nations by going, baptizing, and teaching.
