  • 24 August 2026 Thomas Helwys & The Spitalfields Baptist Church | Romans 14 Religious Liberty & Conscience Memorable Mond
: Thomas Helwys & The Spitalfields Baptist Church | Romans 14 Religious Liberty & Conscience
In this episode of Let’s Talk with Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church, we explore the heroic legacy of Thomas Helwys, founder of the first English Baptist church on home soil in Spitalfields (1612). Discover how Helwys broke from John Smyth’s instability in Amsterdam, risked his life by returning to London, and authored A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity—the first English text demanding absolute religious freedom for every individual.
Rooted in the truth that Christ alone reigns as King over the human heart, Helwys challenged King James I directly, arguing that earthly monarchs possess no power over immortal souls. This uncompromising stance on the separation of church and state, believer's baptism, and individual soul liberty ultimately cost Helwys his life in Newgate Prison. We examine key Scripture passages, including Romans 14:12, Acts 5:29, and 1 Corinthians 6:20, to uncover how biblical convictions regarding the Lordship of Christ and liberty of conscience laid the groundwork for modern Baptist church history and universal religious freedom. Listen in as we reflect on what it means to yield absolute allegiance to King Jesus alone, regardless of the earthly cost.
