  • 015: Unmasking Autism - and Revealing its True Power with Dr. Angela Lauria
We are usually witness to two initial reactions when someone, particularly a child, is diagnosed with Autism. The first one is of concern and fear about all the things that can’t or won’t happen. The second is in embracing and understanding all that autism adds to the world.
Our next guest deliberately chose the second when diagnosed with autism as she turned 40 - realising she suddenly had a very clear explanation and deep understanding of just why her life had played out the way it had.
In this episode of the Raise 1000 Voices podcast, we speak with Dr. Angela Lauria once again but this time on a different subject - unmasking autism and discovering its power. It is an eye-opening, deep conversation about removing the masks of autism so that we can see each other clearly.

Dr Angela wryly acknowledges privilege allowed her establish systems and processes that both managed and masked her autism - but when the pandemic struck every single bit of her scaffolding collapsed.  With her executive functioning supports gone and the routine that kept her emotionally regulated demolished, she found herself dangerously deep in the grips of autistic burnout
In the aftermath, Dr Angela started looking at her autism in a different way, and wondered just what would happen if she did remove the masks that hid her autism from the rest of the world. She found herself rebuilding her supports in a different way, and re-establishing personal relationships.

  • 014: The Impact of Women’s Active Citizenship with Kim Rubenstein
Not a single woman in Australia was involved in the drafting of the Australian Constitution in 1900.  Women - 2 in particular - had to fight for changes to the federal judicial system which made participating in juries more accessible for women.
Quite literally, women’s voices have been absent, ignored, excluded from the mechanisms that frame and govern almost every part of our life since the creation of our nation.  Which is why Kim Rubenstein - one of Australia’s leading experts in Active Citizenship - is so passionate about her work in Constitutional Law.
In this conversation we unlock the importance of women raising their voices, stepping into active citizenship - and why our voices are vital in the next era of Nation building and the necessary constitutional shifts
Kim believes, deeply, that our lived experiences are relevant, if not instrumental, in improving how we live and the governance underpinning it
The absence of our voices as the Constitution, Governments, Legislation and Policy were formed in the creation of the Australian nation has dictated women - and all intersectional parts of society - live a life filled with limitations, where men have dictated what we can and cannot do.   And although society’s structure still makes it difficult for women to recognise the value of active citizenship, Kim hopes to see a change in this space, by acknowledging the hard work of women trailblazers.
Immerse yourself and learn more about Kim’s passion and prowess in her mission to help women understand the impact of their contributions to building a nation that puts high regard on diversity, raising our voices, and the courage to take a stand.
WHAT YOU’LL DISCOVER IN THIS EPISODE:
    • An overview of Kim’s career journey (02:20)
    • Worthwhile outcomes from pursuing the academic pathway (08:40)
    • Why it's crucial for women to be active citizens of society? (11:48)
    • Women’s role in constitution framing (18:27)
    • What can the current generation learn from women in the past (28:42)
    • Fascinating stories about women owning up to their voice and creating change (30:22)
    • Acknowledging the value of individual contributions and the difference it creates (35:42)
    • The book that made the most impact on Kim (38:49)
    • What is she looking forward to? (42:35)
    • What does present Kim learnt from her younger self (44:20)

  • 012: A Humanitarian Approach to Creating Cultures of Courage with Sarah Morse
The thread of culture weaves its way through every element of our life; it underpins how we work, how we think, in our relationships, our communities and creates the rules for the social and economic environments within which we all exist.
Culture, wherever it shows, shapes how we see ourselves, the world, and opportunities.  And unless we are willing to explore and experience the cultural lives of others we remain completely unaware of what happens when more oppressive cultures are allowed to thrive - when freedoms are stripped away, practices dictated, and hope abandoned.
In this episode of the Raise 1000 Voices podcast Sarah Morse and I weave our way through just some of her global humanitarian adventures, and the formidable foundations it has created as she takes a Humanitarian Approach to creating Cultures of C.O.U.R.A.G.E.
At 16 years of age, Sarah mustered the courage to go to East Germany by herself and this adventure became an initiation to both culture shock and REVERSE culture shock - and ignited a lifetime obsession with just how the human experience is shaped by the culture it is immersed in.  She has led a humanitarian life filled with a desire to discover, explore and experience how others live.
Armed with a wealth of experience, Sarah is compelled to transform corporate Australia. Her devotion to bringing courage to workplace cultures is beyond compare. She believes in the importance of being intentional in establishing great workplace cultures that facilitate a positive impact on personal lives.
Being gifted with extraordinary experiences has given Sarah an opportunity to look at life through a different lens, challenge conventional thinking, and have the courage to make a difference.
WHAT YOU’LL DISCOVER IN THIS EPISODE:
    • A profound moment that started her obsession with cultures (02:05)
    • The impact of travelling the world and exploring cultures (08:15)

  • 011: Creating Change to Elevate Women with Jen Wittwer
Do what you can with what you have from where you are.  Three elements that have the power to create the strongest waves of change - especially for women working in male dominated industries who have a higher risk of experiencing bullying, discrimination, and harassment, and often fewer opportunities.
In this episode of Raise 1000 Voices, we discover just how “do what you can with what you have from where you are” has created powerful change to elevate women - and claim their rightful place - in one of the most male dominated arenas in Australia, with Jen Wittwer CSM.
With more than forty years military experience Jen has led people through significant organisational change, culture, and workplace reform, with a laser focus on steering women into more powerful positions.
Despite landing in an environment that was not conducive to achieving her full potential, and a pivotal experience at just 19, Jen never lost her core belief she was capable of instilling change and adding value. She understood the importance of standing up and being heard to ensure other women have the space and place to realise their worth and gather the respect they deserve.
The changes Jen ignited demanded going up against an institution with deep-rooted cultural pillars that prevented women from stepping up. Working first within the Royal Australian Navy, then as the NATO Gender Advisor in Afghanistan, and broad ranging roles since including working with the UN in New York to create Gender Mainstreaming Policy, Jen’s commitment to elevating women shows grit, tenacity, and incredible grace.
Through her experiences in the Royal Australian Navy and her work in some of the most confrontational places in the world, Jen recognises the importance of women raising their voices, authentically, regardless of the environment they’re in. And in this episode she gives a very human, heart-led insight into just how much this really matters.

WHAT YOU’LL DISCOVER IN THIS EPISODE:
    • Contemplating about contributions in this changing world (01:45)
    • Who is Jen now and the circumstances that shaped her (04:42)
    • Crucial factors that influence changes in women's roles (14:08)
    • The impact of working with the new generation navy (17:05)

    • What demonstrates a real activist heart? (28:22)
    • What's heartbreaking about women not raising their voices? (31:29)
    • How does Jen support women to be themselves (34:33)
    • Female leaders who inspire her (37:40)
    • What are Jen's superpower and kryptonite? (40:33)

  • 006: The Power of Compelling Story Telling with Zara Love
Telling a story well sparks action in both the physical and emotional sense - driving others to become more motivated, believe in themselves, or try something new. In this episode of the Raise 1000 Voices podcast, we reveal the power of compelling storytelling with Zara Love.
Zara is the Director of Great Talk, helping people become more charismatic presenters, confident communicators, and captivating storytellers. Furthermore, she works with professional speakers, thought leaders, tech wizzes, and influencers by helping them shape, share, and deliver an engaging message in a more powerful way.
In Zara’s work, Storytelling is never about the person sharing the story, rather, it’s about having the opportunity to take others on a magnificent adventure. One that helps them develop a different perspective in their lives.
The truth is most people find it difficult to share their own stories, especially women. The inner critic can be so powerful that it drowns out every chance to speak powerfully. And this greatly impacts the ability to trust ourselves and bring our voice to the world.
Learning how to dance with the inner critic allows you to take your audience into a remarkable story.
