Summer is the perfect chance to have more time outdoors. It's also the perfect time to enjoy a good book! You can help your children stay consistent with their reading habits and fall in love with reading with Our Summer Reading Challenge! It'll get even the most reluctant readers excited to read and join in the fun!
Why is reading important?
Reading has many benefits for children as they grow up, even if they can’t read by themselves. This is because books are a fantastic way to widen your child’s perspectives and help them understand experiences they might not normally be able to. Additionally, reading as a family gives children the opportunity to discuss topics from the book and expand their understanding even further. In this way, reading becomes a valuable bonding experience for the whole family.
How can a reading challenge help reluctant young readers?
A reading challenge is an excellent way to add some game-like fun to your reading time; your children will work together and have a goal in sight when selecting their books. By using a reading challenge, you can add a new element to your reading choices and encourage children to read outside their comfort zones and help them choose books they wouldn’t normally read.
Our Muslim Homeschool Reading Challenge
The Our Muslim Homeschool Reading Challenge is simple - by using the 18 categories in the image below, children can spend their summer selecting new books to read and enjoy together.
The best part is the categories apply to any age group, so all your children can get involved! Have fun going to the library or bookstore and hunting for books to fit each challenge.
By the end of the reading challenge, your children will have widened their reading experience and enjoyed a variety of books from different authors and genres. They may even find a new favourite!

Reading Challenge categories
Here are the 18 reading categories your children will need for the reading challenge. Now, I know some of these categories seem to be more challenging than others, so I have offered two suggestions for each category: one picture book for younger readers and one book for older readers.
Some of these categories will overlap (a folktale may have won an award AND is also set in the Muslim world) but challenge yourself and your children to find one book for each category. Above all, remember that the more books you discover, the more fun the challenge will be!

When kids experience Ramadan, they do more than watch their parents fast and help with iftar. During Ramadan, children build important memories which will influence how they feel about Ramadan and other Islamic traditions in later life. As parents, it’s our responsibility to do our best to make these memories and feelings positive, to show an Islamic lifestyle is exciting and fascinating.

Aimed at kids aged 4-9, we have gathered stories and activities for you to enjoy with your children throughout the month of Ramadan. Each book and activity has been selected to help you get the most out of this month without adding to your stressful workload!

Children respond positively to stories – as do most humans. For centuries, cultures around the world have used stories to instil important lessons and sentiments in their communities. For this reason, stories are a powerful resource when trying to teach our children Islamic principles. But how do we find the time to use stories in an efficient way and still make the most of Ramadan for ourselves?
The Ramadan Book Club for Kids
We have carefully chosen 4 books for your family to enjoy together during Ramadan – one for each week. Each book wonderfully encapsulates important aspects of Ramadan for your kids to absorb, discuss, and reflect on.

Choosing books for children has never been so hard! With the huge numbers of ever increasing children's books available, deciding which one you're actually going to get is an indomitable task.
Consider this. When you go to the library, how do you choose from the thousands of books that are there, which ones you'll actually take home? When you stumble across a book online, how do you know if it's a "We've got to have this," or if it's a "Nope. Pass!"?
Is it just a matter of making an informed decisions by reading the back cover? Should we put our trust in the publisher's social media marketing and influencer reviews? Or do we literally judge a book by its cover?

February 15, 2021 Dealing with Naysayers | You Shouldn't Homeschool!
As homeschooling parents, we have to overcome many obstacles and hurdles, to provide out children with the education and lifestyle we want for them. When you first begin, one of the biggest barriers to home education, is dealing with naysayers.
In those beginning months and years of home education, many of us are fragile. The slightest bump in the road can shatter our confidence and leave us questioning our decision to homeschool. And so, when people around us find fault in our homeschooling, it can send us into a negative spiral, of self-doubt and shame.

The key to dealing with naysayers is to identify if they are truly coming from a place of concern, or simply feeding their own ego.
In both situations, put yourself into their position and respond with love and compassion.
This doesn't mean that you can't stand up for yourself. If you are being mistreated, you must! But do it with compassion, and you will leave the situation feeling more empowered, and confident in your decision to home educate your kids.

January 06, 2021 Schools are Closed... What Now?
The government announced that schools in the UK would not reopen this January 2021 for at least 6 weeks. This has thrown many families into a state of worry and, in some cases, panic as they come to terms with the fact that they will have to homeschool their children through this lockdown.
Families are concerned how this lockdown will affect their children's education, and want to know how they can effectively homeschool them.
Parents also want to know how they're going to be productive and get everything done, whilst also homeschooling their children.
