Sri Rama was the avatara of Sri MahaVishnu. He appeared as a prince and was subject to a very tough life from an early age. He lived among the people as one of them and showed the path of Dharma by never once straying from this path of righteous conduct. An ideal Son, Student, Friend, Brother, husband and above all a n ideal Ruler. For this reason he is also called the Maryada Purushottama.
Rama Navami is when hindus from all around the world celebrate this great avatara's birthday. Ramanavami falls on the "shukla paksha navami of the chaitra masa". This means the 9th lunar day of the growing phase of the Moon in the lunar month of Chaitra. For thousands of years this day hasd been celebrated by hindus and it has never lost it's importance or charm for the single reason that Rama shines as an example of exemplary behaviour to this day.
