Jesus is the Rescuer of His people, the One who delivered the little city by His wisdom but is not respected or remembered by the foolish. True wisdom is worth not being remembered.

Wisdom tells us to speak truth in quiet to the few who are ready to listen rather than shouting our opinions from the biggest platform we can. It’s easy to be drawn into a shouting match these days, but this kind of behavior only reveals the deficiencies in our character, not the strengths of wisdom. Just as one wise man in a city can be its salvation, so one evil person can bring it to the ground.

Despite how it looks at times, it DOES matter how we live because there is good, evil, and life after death. The reality is that facing the truth about death has a way of making us enjoy life more. Death can make life tragically meaningless or strikingly meaningful.

Believers walk by faith and not by sight [2 Cor. 5:7]. God knows and determines every one of our days, not any of us, no matter how hard we try. If anyone claims to know the mind of God and understand His works, he is a liar [v.17].

Solomon confesses that it seems like the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer, but as we know, things aren’t always what they seem to be. The truth is that it will be well with the righteous, but it will not be well with the wicked.

In Ecc. 8:10 the wicked person’s funeral is a big deal and they are praised in the city.

In Is. 57:1 the righteous person’s funeral is unnoticed and they are seemingly forgotten.

Though we don’t understand the times & ends of our life & deaths, undoubtedly God has a reason. For those who fear the Lord and go from us into His presence, remember that they are “entering into peace”, “possessing the land”, and “inheriting His holy mountain” like Isaiah 57 says. What a glorious comfort to know that God rewards the death of a righteous person with such eternal and incredible gifts of His grace.

The good news of the Gospel is that Jesus has become righteousness, sanctification, and redemption for every person who believes (1 Corinthians 1:30). It is only by the Spirit of God that we can become truly wise.

There are glimpses of beauty in this world that we can and should stop to appreciate, but the reality is that this world is not as it should be - it's broken. This is because our world isn’t doing what it was designed to do. Solomon felt this, too, because he lived in the same world we do "under the sun".

If we're saying things like "This isn't fair" or "Where is the justice?", we have to realize that the answers lie beyond us and beyond what our broken world can answer. Only a person who's life is lived in fear of the Lord can be saved from the brokenness of this world and their own heart.
