Mayor President Sid Edwards joins the show to discuss the progress of the Thrive Plan during a Metro Council meeting. The plan, which has been in development for a long time, required extensive collaboration among various entities, including the council, the mayor's administration team, the federal parish library system, the Council on Aging, and mosquito abatement. The plan received a unanimous 12-vote approval from the council and will now be presented to the public for a vote in November.

Edwards emphasized the importance of the plan in stabilizing the city's budget. He outlined the financial aspects, mentioning a one-time $52 million payment to clear the city's debt, which would result in a recurring revenue of $9 million per year. Additionally, $21 million will be used to address a budget shortfall, leaving $4.5 million to stabilize the budget. Although this does not completely resolve the financial issues, it provides significant stability. The plan also includes potential pay raises for employees, which will be addressed through a zero-based budget approach. Edwards promised to cut unnecessary expenses and improve efficiency with taxpayer money, potentially leading to an employee retention program. The Thrive Plan underwent significant revisions to gain consensus. One major change was the removal of the alimony tax, responding to public opposition to new taxes. The council and other stakeholders worked together to create a plan that the public would support.

Edwards highlighted the bipartisan nature of the collaboration and the importance of unity in achieving the plan's goals. He acknowledged the contributions of various entities, including the library, Council on Aging, and mosquito abatement, which have been crucial in reallocating funds.Looking ahead, Edwards mentioned the possibility of incorporating BREC into the plan, depending on the outcome of state legislation. He expressed optimism about the plan's potential to benefit the entire parish and emphasized the need for continued collaboration and public education to ensure its success.
