THE RETURN: Meh-morial Weekend
In our last episode, SocaSaySo made some predictions of what could go wrong over the biggest party weekend in the States. Well, she couldn’t have predicted this. After being cancelled for the past two years, masqueraders were excited to get back to outside! Unfortunately, outside was not ready for them. DysChick rants with guest host Ms. Jouvert (@MsJouvert) about the catastrophe that was Atlanta Carnival and why she says the city will have to work hard to earn back the public’s trust after what happened.
Then we RAVE to “Can’t Stay Away” by Grenadian soca artiste Jab King. I guess Ms. Jouvert is right. Even when things go wrong, soca is a lifestyle and we can’t stay away!

THE RETURN: Politics over People
2022 kicked off H1 with a bang! That’s an unfortunate pun, but given that the United States has had more mass shootings than there are days in the year, it’s appropriate. The US has a serious gun problem yet it seems that the violence has not shaken lawmakers who seem more interested in political power than changing policies. The only policy they are considering changing is the one protecting women’s reproductive rights. DysChick and SocaSaySo get unfiltered and RANT about whether or not the government will stop putting politics over people.
Then we RAVE to “High Mas” by calypso legend David Rudder. We could all use some good vibrations as we head into Memorial Weekend.

THE RETURN: Jamila the Host
Did you know that our very own SocaSaySo does more than highlight the artist and soca tunes you need to know? She’s also an event host. In this episode, she RANTs about how she got started, why she loves it, and what sets her apart from those other hosts who don’t even do costume changes?!
Then we RAVE to “Don’t Stop Carnival” by Olatunji, a Trinidadian soca artiste who will be performing at this summer’s International African Arts festival being hosted by (you guessed it) Jamila! Tickets available on Eventbrite.

THE RETURN: Caribbean Film
The pandemic is officially over! Well, maybe not. But Third Horizon is coming back to BAM. Third Horizon is an award-winning filmmaking collective dedicated to developing, producing, exhibiting, and distributing film and other art forms that give voice to stories of the Caribbean. In this episode, DysChick RANTs with the group’s Associate Director of Community Engagement, Alysia Christiani, about the return of the film festival on April 27th at BAM, the need for representation for those of us living abroad, and whether or not she thinks Hollywood is ready for an all-Caribbean cast.
Then we RAVE to “Showtime” by Machel Montano, star of the film Bazodee.
Find out more about Third Horizon by visiting their website at http://thirdhorizonfilmfestival.com and following them on social media @thrdhrzn. Also, log on to StudioAnansi.tv to check out some amazing films from Caribbean filmmakers.

THE RETURN: The 80s
Who didn’t love the eighties? Big hair. Crazy fashion. Madonna and Run D.M.C. on the airwaves. It was a magical time. Well, it was also a time of high crime, unemployment, a health epidemic, and due to the Cold War, tension between the US and Russia. Seems a lot like the 2020s, huh? In this episode, DysChick and SocaSaySo RANT about the surreal return to the past.
Then we RAVE to “Rebecca” by Super Blue, which won Road March in Trinidad in 1983.

THE RETURN: Drunk Rant
That’s right. It’s the return of the Drunk Rant! DysChick and SocaSaySo have an unfiltered RANT about the latest headlines: the Black Lives Matter controversy, the Grammy being awarded to US-based reggae band we don’t listen to, and the confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Then we RAVE to “Tusty” by the late, great Blaxx whose homegoing ceremony was fit for a soca legend.

THE RETURN: In Defense of the Black Woman
On Feb 25th, President Joe Biden announced his nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court. His intention was to nominate a Black woman to diversify the highest court in the land. Well, there are many who oppose this nomination and are making it clear as they interrogate– I mean, question Judge Jackson on her record and commendable legal career… no wait, they asked her to define the word “woman” and asked whether or not babies can be racist. We also note that even award shows have been forced to deal with the topic of protecting Black women based on recent events. So, are we defending Black women or nah?
Then we RAVE to “Place in Life” by the late, great Blaxx. The 61-year-old soca icon recently passed away after losing his battle with COVID-19, but we will never forget his contributions to the genre.

THE RETURN: Babylon
Jamaica, Jamaica! In this episode, we RANT about the recent issues in Jamaica. Reggae icon Jah Cure is once again headed to jail, but this time in The Netherlands for stabbing a promoter over nonpayment of EUR 5,000. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge make a royal visit right when the country is considering removing The Queen as head of state. And, oh bacchanal! Jamaica Carnival may have two dates this year, causing many to question whether the Carnival is a money grab rather than a celebration of culture.
Then we RAVE to “Reflections” by Jah Cure. This might be the first time that our Rave is ironic.
