On a special edition of the Rap Addicts Podcast, Mic and Jeff are joined by Angelo Robledo from the Sample Excavator Podcast to discuss the 20th Anniversary of one of the most controversial and ground breaking albums in American music history, the Marshall Mathers LP. The guys touch on how Eminem structured the highest selling hip hop solo album of all-time around his sudden rise to fame coming off of two Grammy wins. How Em kicked up the shock value for a darker, more personal album, that would ultimately kick down the door for mainstream hip hop. Angelo covers the sample controversy over the song “Kill You”, how Dido was all for the “Stan” collaboration, and how the sample for “Kim” sets a different mood for the dark classic. Was “The Way I Am” a message to label head Jimmy Iovine? How devastating was the fallout of this album for Eminem? Why did Lynn Chaney and GLADD protest so hard against the Marshal Mathers LP?
