Rap & Order

For Case 234, we revisit J. Cole's The Off Season. In lieu of "the apology," has it tarnished his catalog? + Kanye has joined the Drake hate train once again with the release of his "Like That" verse, and even had some words for Cole too. And as we continue to wait for Kendrick, maybe this was not what he really wanted.

For this episode, we revisit Kendrick Lamar's album DAMN., one that is often highlighted for perfectly blending his social awareness with commercial content. Digging into the album however, you'll even see hints of Kendrick's growing paranoia- a foreshadowing to K Dot's current reclusiveness.

Case 232 brings our focus to Ghostface Killah's IronMan. The album serves as his solo debut under the incomparable Wu Tang Clan, and was hailed critically. It was released in 1996-a year filled with monumental rap releases and was still a fan-favorite. But was it the best solo debut from the Wu?

Case 231 revisits Vince Staples' Ramona Park Broke My Heart. It's a project that sees the Long Beach native flex his storytelling ability with life experiences. He manages to merge both angles with ease, resulting in one of his most complete bodies of work to date. His vivid storytelling has even resulted in landing his own Netflix show, but will it lead to more focus on his music?

For Case 230, we revisit Lil' Kim's third album, La Bella Mafia. The Brooklyn MC had severed ties with all members of Junior M.A.F.I.A., and her friendship/business partnership with Diddy was also no longer in tact. Standing on her own for the first time since we met her by way of The Notorious B.I.G., Kim sought forth to prove herself. Her legacy never wavered, but how did the album hold up?

For Case 228, we revisit Joey Bada$$' 1999. Though at the time of it's release he was only 17, the BK lyricist was able to tap into an era in Hip-Hop that he was barely old enough to remember-- and yet still managed to offer a fresh perspective. Now 12 years after his debut, what will he do next?

For Case 227, we highlight Rick Ross' Deeper Than Rap album. The Bawse's third studio album was one of his most challenging releases to date, where we'd see him go head-to-head with 50 Cent all while combating allegations that questioned his street cred. But did he come out unscathed?

For Case 225, we revisit Childish Gambino's Funk/Rock inspired Awaken, My Love. The album was quite the departure from his previous releases and leaned heavily on the sounds of Parliament, Curtis Mayfield, and Sly Stone to name a few. But did Gambino's 70's-driven release make it unoriginal?
