We're honoured today to hear Torah from Rabbi (soon to be Dr too) Shlomo Zukier of Yale University and Yeshiva University, who considers, with the help of Tosefta and Yerushalmi, what the case of Sheva Ben Bichri has to teach us about whether the Torah is deontological or consequentialist when it comes to the taking of life.

We see David haMelech in despair at the loss of his son, Avshalom. As Rav Joe points out in the audio recording, this chapter reflects a good deal about David's relationship with his family, as well as with other tribes and other nations.

David is ridiculed while in flight and his son Avshalom has established himself on the throne in Yerushalayim. We also see previous characters re-emerge and prophecies come full-circle.

Things are falling apart. Avshalom's  rebellion continues - David flees Jerusalem, is cursed by Shimei. Meanwhile Achitophel and Hushi give differing advice as to how the son should destroy the father. Also Tziva might be the most vile character in Tanakh

David’s other son, Avshalom, is in exile in Geshur. Yoav, David’s general, uses alternative means—involving a clever woman from Tekoa—to concince David haMelech to bring his son home.
