On this episode of the Raw Islam Podcast with Imam Azhar – a 2017 Podcast Award nominated podcast – they address the value of loving your neighbor

In the week leading up to this episode there had been a shooting in Krogers, there had been pipe bombs mailed to people, and a shooting in Pittsburg. Which the Imam sums up nicely as…what the hell is wrong with us?

In the interest of working locally and working outward, as they often encourage on this show, Imam Azhar challenges the listeners and viewers with the simple question of “How many of you know your eight neighbors?”

That is to say the four on the right of you and the four to the left of you. B.C. says at best he knows two to the right and one to the left. Which, of course, isn’t close to eight.

The Imam goes on to say that it wasn’t until a hurricane hit his neighborhood when he was living in Florida that he got to know he neighbors, and at that point it was out of a necessity to survive.

He reminds us that it is our duty, not as Muslims or Christians or Jews or Atheists, but as humans to look out and care for those around us.

The show opens with Imam Azhar and B.C. Dodge talking about the difference between “Global Warming” and “Climate Change.” Can how we address an issue change how people view it?

B.C. believes that it does make a difference.

As an example of how climate change is a real thing, and is taking place around us, B.C. recounts stories of family members that live in southern Florida and what happened there in regard to the Red Tide this season.

Imam Azhar points out that we need to pay attention to Climate Change, because while the Earth is covered in water – a lot of it is salt water and is not useable. Water needs to be conserved.

As Imam Azhar moves on to the topic picked by our listeners on Twitter, he points out that he struggles to understand why there is so much confusion around this this topic. The struggle is not new, and it is very real.

He points out that there are many Imam’s that spend their energy preaching that Muslims shouldn’t vote, but isn’t this your country? Isn’t it your right?

B.C. starts this episode talking about which is better pancakes or waffles, and while this might seem out of place…the poll that was run on Twitter for this episode actually had two winning topics Pancakes vs Waffles and the Rights of Women in Islam. B.C. is sad that the whole episode is not about pancakes and waffles; But Imam Azhar says there is a correlation between these two topics.

The Imam points out that in Islam, as well as Christianity and Judaism, women have rights and they are to be respected and treated as such. But it is with people injecting culture into religion that the teachings have been altered. The simple fact that in 2018 we have to have a conversation around #MeToo, speaks volumes about where we are as a society.

But doesn’t the Quran teach that it is okay to beat women and to oppress them?

The Imam is getting ready to take a new position as a mosque, quite literally, across the country, and B.C. has some upcoming travel to places where the internet does not reach and adding to all that it will soon be Eid Al Adha…our team gets ready to put a wrap on season 1.

Imam Azhar reflects on his schooling and the dua that he made upon graduating, which was simply that he would like to go where he is needed. Growing up he was blessed to have access to scholars, and he understood that not everyone in the world has that.

It was with the dua that he found himself in Florida where he was became the Imam at a mosque in the Tampa area.

And while his blessings were many while working there, the time has come for him to on to other opportunities. And here he announces that he will be taking a position as the Imam as the Islamic Association of Collin County Mosque in Plano, TX, or the IACC.

This episode gets a little emotional as the team, and the live audience shares their good buys and gets ready to take some time off.

Imam Azhar lays out four questions about personal opinions. The first question is simply if we are allowed to have them. And the answer – no big surprise – is that we are all allowed to have our opinions and our thoughts, no one should disagree with that that statement.

The second question is what helps you formulate those opinions?

Our opinions are often built around some kind of personal doctrine. Be it religion, or life experience, or education, or worst of all – they could come from ignorance.

In these times, with everything that is going on in the United States, Muslims are being pushed to give their opinions on topics like immigration, abortion, and LGBTQ rights.

The third question is simply – are we obligated to give to give voice to our opinions? If you have an opinion, does that mean that you have to share it? (Have you been on Twitter?) Or have we reached a point where we are too afraid to share our opinions for fear that we might scare or offend someone?

Ramadan is over, and it was a much needed time to rest and recharge our brains and our souls. But the time of rest ended quickly as the world called our attention back with so much news – but we still need to try and stay focused and remember to not get run down as we are no good to anyone when we are running on zero battery.

With the news that has been leaked about families being tore apart at the border, Imam Azhar wants to address the issue – not from a political standpoint, but from a religious one. What does Islam say about separating families?

The truth is – no matter how much someone tweets about it – everyone that enters this country is allowed to have due process, that is the law. To build on that, we have the three branches of government to make sure that one branch does not become so powerful that it can change the fabric of the United States. In the Constitution it says that everyone on our soil is due due process, this went to the Supreme Court and was challenged, and upheld.

Islam teaches us that loyalty is not expressed through being a “yes man,” and for those that are standing around and not speaking out on injustices that are happening around us, they are just a guilty as those doing the crimes.

There are more protests happening around the country, there are battles raging on in Palestine, there are volcanos erupting in Hawaii, and the personal struggles press on through Ramadan – So why are Muslims feeling that it is business as usual? Why are we missing that Ramadan spirits this year?

B.C. Dodge says that he has heard this a lot. People are not putting in the effort, by their emission of guilt, and thus are not getting out what they wanted. But what is causing this? And how can we fix it?

Imam Azhar says that we need to take time, we need to step away from our distractions and focus on getting closer to God. Something as simple as holding the Quran – if you can find time to read it – simply hold it and pray. But doing nothing but complaining about how disconnected you feel will not fix the issue.
