  • Dr. Cliff Deveny - President & CEO, Summa Health
One of the biggest topics in workplaces throughout America in 2021 has been vaccination status. Most employers are recommending their staff to get one of the vaccines, but mandating them was a tall task, at least a few months ago.
Summa Health has decided to draw a line in the sand and mandate all of their employees get the vaccine, according to president and CEO Dr. Cliff Deveny, who joined the Ray Horner Morning Show. Summa employs 8,100 employees, and Dr. Deveny says they have upwards of 70% of their staff inoculated. He says this is not necessarily a new policy, as his employees also have to get flu shots every year.
If an employee does not take the vaccine, there is a code of conduct and process before that employee can be terminated. There are possible exemptions, ranging from medical concerns to religious reasons.

  • Donna Skoda - Summit County Health Commissioner
As the Delta variant rages through the population, vaccine demand is increasing since its initial debut in late winter to early spring. Many have heard the transmissibility of this variant and are not taking changes, so they are scheduling appointments as soon as possible.
Donna Skoda is the commissioner of the Summit County Health Department, and she joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to touch on the demand for those vaccines, which are free and readily available at the health department for those interested. While no vaccine is 100%, Skoda still urges those who have yet to get the jab to do so, as they will be better protected against serious illness than those who have not been inoculated.

  • Dr. Richard Londraville - Biologist, University of Akron
The Delta variant of COVID-19 is raging through the population, with upwards of 85% of the cases in the United States being this strain of the virus. This is causing concern across the country, from the medical facilities to the upcoming school year.
Dr. Richard Londraville is a biologist at the University of Akron, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to answer questions revolving around the Delta variant. Dr. Londraville touched on how the vaccines are fighting this variant, which have shown success, but are not 100% effective in stopping the virus. He says even fully vaccinated people can still get infected with Delta, but the vaccinated are at a much lower risk of getting seriously ill if contracted.
Dr. Londraville also talked about the hesitancy some have in taking a vaccine without FDA approval, as well as the potential for a third booster shot to stave off future variants.
