  • Uncharted Waters: What Did We Actually Learn from a Year of Pandemic Teaching?

We survived the most challenging year in the history of modern education—but at what cost?

In the series finale of Parents, Teachers, and COVID-19, we close the book on the 2020-2021 school year. As a veteran social studies educator with two decades in the classroom, I take an honest, final look at the "uncharted waters" we navigated together.

From the technical hurdles of Zoom and hybrid learning to the emotional toll of social distancing and the visible loss of student engagement, we break down the highs and the devastating lows. This isn't just a recap; it’s an essential archive of the shifts that are still impacting our classrooms in 2026. Join me as we dig in one last time to analyze the legacy of a school year that redefined the relationship between teachers, parents, and students forever.

  • Is Retirement Guaranteed? Reflecting on Career Longevity and Life’s Fragility

We are taught to work hard for 30 years and wait for the "finish line"—but what if the finish line moves?  In this episode of Ray Talks Live, we take a somber and honest look at the concept of retirement. It is supposed to be a season of honor, travel, and grandkids, but for many, that dream remains out of reach.

Drawing on my two decades as an educator, I reflect on the dedication required to spend a lifetime in one profession and the harsh reality of what happens when life doesn't allow for that "happily ever after." We discuss the importance of finding joy during the journey, rather than just waiting for the end. Whether you are just starting your career or are decades in, this is a necessary conversation about work, legacy, and the value of the time we have right now.

  • Monday Review: New CDC Guidelines (Cruises & Theme Parks)

Last week (May 10-16, 2021), the CDC updated its guidelines for fully vaccinated Americans.  Has it been two weeks since your second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines OR the one dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine?  Then you know longer have to wear a face mask indoors or outdoors unless where federal, state or local mandates are still in place.  Therefore, you can go back to normal activities prior to the pandemic.  The CDC also updated its guidelines for the cruise industry in the United States.  PLUS with the new CDC guidelines, the theme parks quickly updated their policies in allowing guests to now walk freely without face coverings.

  • Justice vs. The Cost: Why the Chauvin Verdict Was a 'No-Win' for America

A verdict was reached, but has anything truly changed?

In this pivotal episode of Ray Talks Live, we examine the guilty verdict of former officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd. While the court's decision was a landmark moment for the American legal system, we dive into the sobering reality of the "no-win" situation facing our country as we continue to grapple with systemic racism.

As a veteran social studies educator, I discuss why the verdict—while correct—is only a single step in a much larger journey. We explore the deep-seated costs of this tragedy and why the only true cure for our national divide is the willingness to engage in open, honest, and often difficult conversations with one another. Whether you are looking for historical context or a candid reflection on modern justice, this episode is a call for empathy and systemic understanding.

  • Zoom, Masks, and Teams: How the 2021 Reopening Changed Schools Forever

In August 2021, the world prepared to return to the classroom—but did we ever really "go back" to the way things were?  In this episode of Ray Talks Live, we revisit the pivotal moment when the CDC gave school districts the green light for 100% in-person learning. As we stood on the precipice of a post-lockdown world, I examine the burning questions of the time: Would face masks and social distancing remain permanent fixtures? And what would happen to the digital tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams that had become our lifelines?

As a veteran educator with two decades in social studies, I offer an "on-the-ground" perspective from that transitional summer. This is an essential listen for anyone interested in the history of educational policy, the evolution of classroom technology, and the resilience of teachers and students during a period of radical change.

  • Parenting vs. Power Struggles: Why Your Child Isn't the Head of the Household

Does your household have a clear leader—or has the power dynamic shifted?  In this episode of Ray Talks Live, we tackle an age-old question that feels more complicated than ever: Who runs the house? We dive into the growing trend of households where children hold the reins, despite not paying the mortgage or stocking the pantry. I share my unfiltered take on why clear boundaries are essential for a healthy home and the pitfalls of "child-led" dynamics.

We also break down the viral 2021 controversy involving gospel legend Kirk Franklin and his teenage son. We discuss the ethics of secretly recording parents, the reality of "tough love," and what it means to set the record straight in a digital age where privacy is becoming a thing of the past. Whether you're a parent struggling with a power struggle or just interested in the intersection of celebrity and family values, this is a candid conversation about respect and responsibility.

  • The 'Golden Era' of Low Crowds? Revisiting Disney World’s 2021 Limited Capacity

Was 2021 actually the best time to be at Walt Disney World?  In this episode of Ray Talks Live, we take a trip back to the busy Spring Break season of 2021. During a two-day retreat, I experienced the parks during a unique window of time: limited guest capacity, social distancing, and a world still waiting for a return to "normalcy."

As a veteran Annual Passholder and lifelong Floridian, I share my thoughts on why that specific moment might have been the most peaceful time to visit the Magic Kingdom in a generation. We discuss the benefits of restricted attendance, the reality of park-going during a pandemic, and how those experiences compare to the bustling, high-demand environment we see in 2026. Whether you're a Disney historian or a frequent traveler, join me for an honest look at a year the parks will never see again.
