When we talk about things that distract us from God, it’s easy to think of things external to ourselves. What I mean is, it’s easy to say bad relationships are a distraction or work can be a distraction. It is much harder to acknowledge that we, ourselves, and our own sin can be the biggest distraction from God.
The Bible says in Galatians 5:19-21, “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.” And of course, as believers, we know it’s not necessarily about committing these exact acts, but about where our heart is, too.
If you’re struggling with sin, first of all, confess to God and be forgiven. Then, talk to a pastor or someone you trust, if you need help breaking with your sinful habits. Third, trust that God wants more for you than a life of shame and guilt, and give yourself completely to Him.
We will never be perfect, but we can work to eliminate sin from our lives. When we are walking with God, we are renewed and cleansed. And then, God can use us to reach our world. This is Luis Palau.
