A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is the second book and first novel of Irish writer James Joyce, published in 1916. A KĂŒnstlerroman written in a modernist style, it traces the religious and intellectual awakening of young Stephen Dedalus, Joyceâs fictional alter ego, whose surname alludes to Daedalus, Greek mythologyâs consummate craftsman. Stephen questions and rebels against the Catholic and Irish conventions under which he has grown, culminating in his self-exile from Ireland to Europe.

James Joyceâs A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age novel that documents development of Stephen Dedalus. It could be summarised as: âThereâs Joyce in the corner, losing his religion.â
It was interesting thinking about A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in comparison with Marcel Proustâs In Search of Lost Time as a means of capturing life.
I found a reading on Audible by Colin Farrell, so I thought Iâd give it a listen. I did read the book many years ago, but had forgotten much of it. I did remember that I liked the book and was intrigued therefore to revisit it and my past self.
