Dr. Martin Luther King’s letter from a Birmingham jail was penned during a very pivotal moment in the civil rights struggle. Dr. King was arrested during the children’s crusade protest in Birmingham. He came under criticism from evangelicals and other religious leaders who thought that he was moving too fast and that the protest was undermining the struggle for civil rights. Responding to their letter, king passionately and eloquently supported his methods and the reasons behind the protest. I personally like to read his letter at least once a year as a reminder of just how powerful and important his letter was then and still is today. It is my hope that whoever listens to his powerful words will get the message and be clear as to why we must still fight and struggle for equal rights. Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere.The struggle continues and we must except the challenge of continuing the non-violent methods and principles for social protest.
