In 1284, while the town of Hamelin was suffering from a rat infestation, a piper dressed in multicolored ("pied") clothing appeared, claiming to be a rat-catcher. He promised the mayor a solution to their problem with the rats. The mayor, in turn, promised to pay him for the removal of the rats (according to some versions of the story, the promised sum was 1,000 guilders). The piper accepted and played his pipe to lure the rats into the Weser River, where they all drowned.

A long long time ago, there lived an old farmer and his wife who had made their home in the mountains, far from any town. Their only neighbor was a bad and malicious tanuki. This tanuki used to come out every night and run across to the farmer's field and spoil the vegetables and the rice which the farmer spent his time in carefully cultivating. The taunki at last grew so ruthless in his mischievous work, and did so much harm everywhere on the farm that the good-natured farme could not stand it any longer, and determined to put a stop to it. So he lay in wait day after day and night after night, with a big club, hoping to catch the tanuki, but all was in vain. Then he laid traps for the animal.

Once on a time a king was hunting in a great wood, and he pursued a wild animal so eagerly that none of his people could follow him. When evening came he stood still, and looking round him he found that he had lost his way; and seeking a path, he found none. Once upon a time, there was a fisherman named Urashima Taro. Taro lived with his mother.

One day, walking along the beach, the children were bullying small turtles. Taro stop them bullying the turtle, and gave the turtle back to the sea.

The next day, Taro was fishing along the beach. A large sea turtle faced the ocean from the sea. The sea turtle said, “Thank you for helping my son yesterday, I will take you to Dragon Palace.” The sea turtle put Taro on her back and dives into the sea.

In the Dragon Palace, beautiful Princess Oto welcomed Taro, and he was welcomed with delicious treats and dancing of fish dance. Taro danced and he enjoyed a couple of days.

One day, Taro decided to go home, and he said, “My mother will get angry if I do not return home soon.” Princess Oto said, “This is a treasure of Dragon Palace. When you face in trouble, you can open it”. She handed a special box to the Taro.

Once upon a time, in a certain place, and there lived a grandfather and grandmother.

The old man on the lawn to the mountain, the old woman went to the selection to the river.

Once upon a time, there lived an exceedingly poor but very kind old man and his wife. One very cold winters day, the old man decided to go off to town to sell some firewood. But there in the middle of a field the old man saw a crane struggling in a trap that had been laid.

There once lived a man and his wife, who had long wished for a child, but in vain. Now there was at the back of their house a little window which overlooked a beautiful garden full of the finest vegetables and flowers; but there was a high wall all round it, and no one ventured into it, for it belonged to a witch of great might, and of whom all the world was afraid.

There was once a rich man whose wife lay sick, and when she felt her end drawing near she called to her only daughter to come near her bed, and said, "Dear child, be pious and good, and God will always take care of you, and I will look down upon you from heaven, and will be with you." And then she closed her eyes and expired. The maiden went every day to her mother's grave and wept, and was always pious and good. When the winter came the snow covered the grave with a white covering, and when the sun came in the early spring and melted it away, the man took to himself another wife.
