||  Creating a Legacy ||

This week on Episode 113 of the #ReadswithRosaPodcast, I sit down and talanoa with a proud Sāmoan storyteller, born in Aotearoa New Zealand and now based in Western Sydney. Gabriel Faatau’uu-Satiu is the founder and Creative Director of Satiu Studios, one of few Pasifika-led organisations in Australia that is dedicated to Pasifika stories - screen, stage, online and print. He is a writer and educator, a member of the Black Friars Theatre Company and the creator the digital series ‘The Kokos’ in collaboration with the Pasifika Education Centre. Gabriel’s first children’s book ‘Where I’m From’, was published in September 2022 and he is also the author of the anthology series, ‘Breaking Bread’, which weaves traditional Pasifika forms of storytelling with contemporary screen arts storytelling. Gabriel is the director of ‘Untitled: A Life In The Day Of…..which debut at the Pasifika Film Festival in November last year. It’s a film by Satiu Studios with a multidisciplinary cast/crew of Sāmoan heritage from across the greater western suburbs of Sydney, highlighting what it means to be brown through a Sāmoan lens.

This week on Episode 111 of the #ReadswithRosaPodcast, I sit down for a talanoa with Audrey Brown-Pereira, an acclaimed and innovative poet who’s renown for her wordplay.

She has contributed to a number of anthologies and released three poetry books: ‘𝚃𝚑𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚜 𝚘𝚏 𝚃𝚒𝚟𝚊𝚎𝚟𝚊𝚎: 𝙺𝚊𝚕𝚎𝚒𝚍𝚘𝚜𝚔𝚘𝚙𝚎 𝚘𝚏 𝙺𝚘𝚕𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚜’ 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑 𝚅𝚎𝚛𝚘𝚗𝚒𝚌𝚊 𝚅𝚊𝚎𝚟𝚊𝚎 (2002),  ‘𝙿𝚊𝚜𝚜𝚊𝚐𝚎𝚜 𝚒𝚗 𝙱𝚎𝚝𝚠𝚎𝚎𝚗 𝙸(𝚜)𝙻𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚜’ (2014) and her latest collection, - ‘𝙰-𝚠𝚊𝚔𝚎-(𝚎)𝚗𝚍’ which was released in May of this year through independent publisher of Moana Pacific poetry books in Aotearoa New Zealand, Saufo'i Press. Outside of writing, Audrey is part of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, which focuses on climate change and environmental issues affecting SIDS (Small Island Developing States) in the Pacific.  She was the special poetry curator for Mana Moana Pasifika Voices which was launched in Egypt last year at COP27.

This week on Episode 108 of the #ReadswithRosaPodcast I sit down for a talanoa with Artist and Graphic Designer, Linda Va’aelua. Her work looks closely at her Samoan and Scottish lineage, as well as her position as a Tagata Moana artist within the Samoan diaspora in Aotearoa. Linda has more than 20 years of experience as a graphic designer, was the first Pasifika art director for NZ Women’s Weekly, and more recently she designed the award-winning book NUKU: Stories of 100 Indigenous Women (𝚏𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚝 𝙾𝚌𝚔𝚑𝚊𝚖 𝙽𝚎𝚠 𝚉𝚎𝚊𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝙱𝚘𝚘𝚔 𝙰𝚠𝚊𝚛𝚍𝚜 𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟸, 𝚏𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚝 𝙿𝙰𝙽𝚉 𝙱𝚘𝚘𝚔 𝙳𝚎𝚜𝚒𝚐𝚗 𝙰𝚠𝚊𝚛𝚍𝚜 𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟸).

This year on Samoan Language Week saw the launch of “𝐓𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐀 𝐎 𝐋𝐄 𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐀 𝐎 𝐋𝐄 𝐕𝐀𝐕𝐀𝐔: 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬” - a book compiled by Linda that pays homage to her uncle Iosua To’afa, a pioneer and hugely important Samoan artist who illustrated the 1976 iconic book - 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐨 𝐥𝐞 𝐕𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐮 - 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐚. The book launch was also accompanied by an exhibition (𝚌𝚞𝚛𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚕𝚢 𝚛𝚞𝚗𝚗𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚞𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚕 𝙹𝚞𝚕𝚢 𝟷𝟻𝚝𝚑 𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝙰𝚛𝚝𝚜 𝙲𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚛𝚎), which showcases original work by To’afa and nine Aotearoa-based Samoan visual artists and renowned contemporary practitioners.
