If you use a wheelchair to fly on almost any American airline, you have to hand your legs over to a stranger. If they break your wheelchair, and they do, you arrive at your destination without a way to move. If you need to use the bathroom on a single-aisle plane, in most cases you can't. So people dehydrate all day, wear diapers, or have accidents in their seats. This is not the exception. This is the rule.
In this conversation, I sit down with someone who has lived the reality of American disability policy from the inside, and who now leads a policy fight in Washington to fix a system that quietly traps millions of Americans in poverty and pushes millions more into emergency rooms, prisons, and homelessness.
We talk about the dollar limit that keeps disabled Americans from saving for retirement, marrying, or even owning a second car. We talk about the perverse Medicaid formula that rewards states for enrolling healthy people over the ones who most need care. We talk about the sixty-year-old rule quietly starving America of the mental health beds we desperately need, and the one policy shift that could unlock real work, real independence, and real dignity for millions.
If you love someone with a disability, or you want to understand where American healthcare, mental health, and disability policy actually went wrong, this is the episode.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- The airline reality most Americans have no idea exists, and what happens when the disabled traveler has to fly alone
- The single-number rule buried in a nineteen-sixties law that quietly forces disabled Americans to stay poor to stay alive
- The well-intentioned reform from decades ago that is a hidden reason your emergency rooms are overflowing with mental health crises today
