I get tons of questions on REITs so I decided to create an episode for it!

The biggest misconception potential investors ask me, is if they can still invest in REITs AND be a homeowner? The answer is yes.

REITs do not impact your credit score or any other area of your finances. They exist separately, which means that you can invest in both and they won't negatively impact you.

In fact, REITs are required to pay 90% of it's revenue to investors (you and me!) and you can use that passive income to improve other areas of your life, such as paying off some of your debt or catching up on bills.

I know, I know. We’re in a pandemic and it has impacted everyone differently. Some have lost a lot, like their employment for example. Purchasing a home is going to cost you, and that’s before you even step foot into it as the owner.

When I started my homebuying process, I was unaware of many things that I was responsible for like inspections, title search fees etc. However, I quickly realized that obtaining these would save me time, money and a future headache so I was willing to invest a lot to ensure that my investment would generate the ROI (equity) I needed. I also didn’t want to skip out on these expenses and move into a home with mold issues, fire hazards or major repairs.

Check out Episode 20 (yikes, 20 episodes!) where I breakdown 5 expenses that you should start saving for now. 

These include:
1. Title insurance
2. Inspections
3. Appraisals
and more!

I will also highlight the purpose behind them and highlight how much they cost on average.

There are programs out there that can assist with this, but I always recommend that you set aside money anyway because some of the programs have regulations around how long you must stay in the home. Or even if you can rent it.

A few weeks ago, I watched a documentary called Segregated By Design and it really blew my mind.

It really just reaffirmed that the black history of real estate is very complicated. From being seen as property, to attempting to buy property, to faulty lending practices, to the widening racial wealth gap - it's deep.

With everything that's going on right now (my heart goes out to Breonna Taylor's family), I figured that it was time to use my platform to provide you with more stories that you didn't know about. These stories are why I go so hard for real estate and why I have a soft spot for creating more homeowners. For so many years and decades, my people have been held back from "the American dream" and I owe to my ancestors to share their stories. No one in mainstream media is and that's okay.
