In February 1959, nine experienced Soviet hikers set out into the northern Ural Mountains and were never seen alive again. When searchers found their camp, the tent had been cut open from the inside, the hikers' footprints led calmly into the freezing night, and severalbodies showed catastrophic internal injuries with no external wounds to explain them. Mary Ann Poll traces the documented evidence and asks what could have made nine trained mountaineers abandon shelter in temperatures that would kill them within minutes.
