Cannabidiol -  more commonly known as CBD is one of 113 identified cannabinoids in the cannabis plant and accounts for up to 40% of the plant's extract. 

Over the past 5 years we have seen increased interest from clinical researchers in CBD, with preliminary studies of anxiety, cognition, insomnia, movement disorders, and pain.

CBD can be taken into the body in multiple ways, including by inhalation of cannabis smoke or vape, as an aerosol spray into the cheek, and by mouth using a tincture or tablets. It is also commonly used in topicals like lotions and cremes.

CBD is most commonly extracted from the Hemp plant as a CBD-dominant hemp oil. It contains only CBD as the active ingredient and no THC. THC is the ingredient most associated with making you high.

Over the past couple of years we have witnessed an explosion in CBD popularity amongst consumers, most of which is fueled by curiosity, but in the minds of many there is no question as to CBD’s overall efficacy.

For hundreds of years Cannabis has been used as a natural medicine by many cultures across the world. But many modern day doctors seem more invested in synthetic medicines that come with a host of dependencies and side effects. Are doctors biased in their decision to choose synthetic medicines over natural medicines? Or are we just dealing with a lack of education and research amongst the medical community.

In todays show, we take a deeper look at this question with our special guest Dr. Vanessa Cumming.

Dr. Vanessa Cumming Bio

Vanessa is a senior clinical research coordinator for adult and pediatric sickle cell services at the University of Miami School of Medicine. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a BSc in Biology in 1994 and then moved to Jamaica and joined the TMRU, UWI where she completed an Advanced Diploma in Nutrition in 1995. She worked at the TMRU as a research assistant for two years before she went on to obtain an MB BS at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and graduated in 2002. During her medical degree she obtained a Commonwealth Scholarship for her elective period of study with Dr Paul Telfer, haemoglobinopathy specialist, at the Royal London Hospital in London, England. Upon completion of her medical degree, she finished her internship period with the Government of Jamaica at the Kingston Public Hospital. She returned to the University of the West Indies in 2004 and was involved in both clinical and research practices at the Sickle Cell Unit, Mona. Dr. Cumming then moved to the United States and continued working in biomedical research and hemoglobinopathies at the University of Miami, her work focussed on academic medicine rather than clinical practice while in the USA. She is also currently enrolled in a Master of Science in Public Health degree program while working full time at the University of Miami.

Research Interests

Vanessa’s first research interest was in asymptomatic bacteriuria in sickle cell disease. She has since completed some retrospective work on chronic leg ulceration in HbSS disease. She also pursued interests in aspects of metabolism and nutrition in patients with different types of sickle cell diseases while at the Sickle Cell Unit, TMRI. Since joining the sickle cell team at the University of Miami she has focused primarily on industry sponsored research in sickle cell, but has also been involved with some smaller investigator-initiated research projects and guiding clinical fellows during their research rotations through pediatric hematology/ oncology. During her MSPH studies, she has expanded some of her research to include public health and environmental health initiatives throughout the southern USA and the Caribbean Region.

Over the past couple of weeks we have seen reports on the news - of a number of people getting sick from various vape products - and as of this recording I am sad to say that 7 people have allegedly died from lung disease related to vaping.

On behalf of the JamRock team, I would like to share our sincere condolences to the families who have suffered the loss of their loved ones.

News reports to date have been vague, we have seen the CDC and states like Michigan, New York and others moving forward to ban vaping products, even President Trump has called for vaping to be better regulated. All this without a clear understanding of the root cause for the sudden surge in illness and death.

While this appears to be a public safety issue, it is also terrible news for the Hemp CBD and Cannabis industries. Vape products happen to be one of the most popular segments amongst consumers.

There is no question that the Cannabis Industry is maturing, but despite all the rules and regulations - it is truly reminiscent of the Wild Wild West - where you have the settlers looking for a better life, the bandits looking to rob and steal, the law trying to keep up and the snake oils sales man selling everything from treasure maps, fake land deeds and elixirs that promise to cure all.

A more recent parallel would be the .COM bubble of the 90’s where every website was the next big thing. These delusions of grandeur are generally not just fueled by the Entrepreneur but most times by false prophets still peddling snake oil - looking to make a fast buck at the expense of the entrepreneurs or the unsuspecting investor.

The Cannabis industry has the potential to be largest global industry of our generation with some projecting market sizes larger than the beverage and tobacco markets combined. This kind of potential makes fertile ground for the snake oil sales man or lets be politically correct snake oil sales person to work. But there is clearly one big difference these bad actors are much harder to identify, they come in all sizes, genders, roles and colors but the most common ones are lawyers posing as cannabis consultants or investors who say they will help you raise capital but really are just trying to overly leverage your company or game the stock market by taking you public before you have even earned a penny.

Now to be fair, like every industry there are good subject matter experts who can really deliver for you and having personally gone through the process of vetting many of these individuals and companies I thought it important to share my experience and some of the methods I used to spot these bad actors coming from a mile away.
