Welcome to Episode 94 of Real Japanese Talk with Haruka & Saki! ๐ผ๐
๐ "You hunt the leaves? With what?" Saki's friend read the characters for ็ด
่็ฉใ and pictured weapons. Nothing gets caught, nothing gets picked - so why is it called hunting? ๐ฏ
You'll learn three words:
โข ่ฒใฅใ (irozuku) - for leaves or fruit to take on colour
โข ็บใใ (nagameru) - to gaze at something, slowly and at a distance
โข ็ใ (sakari) - the peak; the very best moment of a season
๐ก Inside: why a wide gap between day and night temperatures makes the colours deeper, and why that favours Kyoto in its ring of mountains; how ใ็บใใใ differs from plain ใ่ฆใใ - it carries time in it, which is the whole activity; the old story behind ใ็ฉใใ, from an era when people took a branch in hand to admire it, leaving the word behind after the picking stopped - and its living relatives, ใใใกใ็ฉใใ and ใใถใฉใ็ฉใใ, where you really do pick; ใ่ฆ้ ใ and the nightly forecast that tracks it; and the autumn front that runs north to south, exactly opposite the cherry blossom - from late September in Hokkaido to late November in Kyoto.
Perfect for N4-N3 learners travelling in autumn. Tokyo & Kansai dialogue, fully shadowable. Full transcript & study notes on Patreon. ๐ง
ใToday's Vocabulary / ไปๆฅใฎ่จ่ใ
ใป่ฒใฅใ (ใใใฅใ) - To take on colour, to begin to turn. It is used for leaves reddening (ใๅฑฑใ่ฒใฅใใ), fruit ripening into colour (ใใใใใ่ฒใฅใใ), and occasionally the sky at dusk. It is intransitive - the leaves do it by themselves; there is no one colouring them. Related nouns worth knowing: ใ็ด
่ใ (read ใใใใ as a process, ใใฟใ as the maple leaf itself), ใ่ฝใก่ใ (ochiba, fallen leaves), and ใๆฏใใใ (kareru, to wither), which is what comes after. Related words: ใๆใพใใ (somaru, to be dyed - more poetic), ใ็ใใ (jukusu, to ripen).
ใป็บใใ (ใชใใใ) - To gaze, to look out over. The difference from ใ่ฆใใ is time and distance: ใ็บใใใ implies an unhurried, wide, often distant look - ใๆฏ่ฒใ็บใใใ, ใ็ชใฎๅคใ็บใใใ, ใใผใใใ็บใใใ (to gaze absently). The noun ใ็บใใ means a view, as in ใ็บใใใใ้จๅฑใ (a room with a good view). Contrast ใ่ฆใคใใใ (mitsumeru), which is the opposite in scale - staring intently at one thing, usually close by. Related words: ใ่ฆๆธกใใ (miwatasu, to survey a whole scene), ใ่ฆ็ฉใใใ (kenbutsu suru, to sightsee), ใ็บใใ (nagame, a view).
ใป็ใ (ใใใ) - The peak, the height, the prime. Seasonally: ใๆกใไปใ็ใใ ใ (the cherry blossom is at its height); of people: ใๅใ็ใใ (the prime working years), ใ่ฒใก็ใใ (a growing child, always hungry); of weather: ใๆใ็ใใ (the height of the heat). It comes from the verb ใ็ใใ/ใ็ใใ (sakan, thriving). For seasonal viewing specifically, ใ่ฆ้ ใ (migoro, the best time to see it) is the word used in forecasts. Related words: ใ่ฆ้ ใ (migoro), ใๆฌใ (shun, in season, for food), ใใใผใฏใ (piiku, peak - the borrowed word).
