An hour before her emcee duties at the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center’s Connect+Cure Gala in OKC, Nicole Johnson joined us and shared her perspectives since winning Miss America in 1999. From the surprising career trajectory afterward, to dating and diabetes scenarios, we embraced the whole journey. Per the usual flow of the show, many laughs were had, and we all got to know each other. 

BIO:

Nicole Johnson has served as a diabetes advocate since she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1993 and has worked tirelessly promoting diabetes awareness and prevention since she was named Miss America 1999.

Nicole is a Telly award-winning television journalist and an avid writer. Her articles on living with diabetes have appeared in USA Today, Guideposts Magazine, Diabetes Health, Diabetes Forecast, and on various websites related to diabetes. She has written seven books including her most recent transition guide for young adults living with diabetes, Young Adult Type 1 Diabetes Realities.

Nicole holds a Doctoral degree in Public Health from the University of South Florida and a Master’s degree in Journalism and Public Health.  Her education combined with her personal experiences living with diabetes led her to her professional position at the University of South Florida. At USF, Nicole created and operates a program called Bringing Science Home, where she and her team investigate the connection between chronic disease, family dynamics and optimistic living.

Having served with Ryan at Camp Blue Hawk on the medical staff, he was ready to pick her brain about her thoughts on paleo vs vegan, parenting pitfalls in diet, and how she found dietetics. The result? A conversation that stays open-minded and focuses on the big picture: steady blood sugars without compromise to long-term longevity. As one of the founding members of the diabetes blogging world, Scott has watched the DOC bloom into a world that hosts 1000s of posts per year, and he couldn’t be more proud. He’s honest, approachable, and has done a lot of diabetes introspection over the years. Amber labeled him the “most huggable” person of the DOC. You’ll soon understand after listening.

Scott Johnson is an experienced patient advocate who has worked with a wide range of stakeholders across the healthcare environment to help them establish effective communication with the patient community. His expertise in the diabetes social media space is recognized worldwide. Today he is the Patient Success Manager, US for mySugr.com (all opinions are expressed are his own and do not necessarily represent the position of his employer) and continues to run his award-winning blog “Scott’s Diabetes” as time allows.

Scott is also a member of the Children with Diabetes faculty where he develops educational curriculums and content for the Friends of Life annual conference and regional events. He served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for the Diabetes Hands Foundation and was a founding member of Partnering for Diabetes Change, a coalition of people living with diabetes and industry representatives working to support culturally diverse and underserved communities. He is interested in how these types of interactions including peer-to-peer support, impact patient outcomes and routinely presents his work.
