That's What You Get Wednesday is back for another week!  This week I bring up the fact the you, me and everyone has this thing called a "Confirmation Bias" that we must overcome if we actually want to find a real tangible and objective ways in which to be better.  It is a difficult thing to do, however if you don't work on identifying the fact that you are constantly operating from a place of your own confirmation biases then you can expect to never change your mind about anything, and if that is the case, what is the point of continuing to live?  If you are not learning and growing you may as well start digging your own 6 foot ditch.

Cliches are cliche for a reason. Because they have meaning and have withstood the test of time of being a statement packed with meaning. The expression that comes to mind today is "The journey of 1,000 miles begins with the first step." This is a very simple truth but it is only the first truth. The power that comes with the first step, if we look at this literally, is that your body is now in motion. Think about it after you are running, you cannot just stop on a dime, at least not without serious impact on your body. You have to slow your momentum down first in order to come to a complete halt. Use this mentally. Your mind has momentum too and knocking down little victories can be significant in getting the ball rolling!

We hear Discriminate and immediately our preformed societal definition comes into our mind. We think "oh! Bad! We can never Discriminate! I would never Discriminate!" I would say that I hate to be the one to tell you, but honestly. I love to be the one to tell you that you discriminate every day! This discrimination is how you decide which tie to wear and which shoes match that outfit. Without discrimination our lives would be a mess! How can you empower this important tool to your advantage? Tune in and find out!

How long can you spend on a single thought? Ever try meditating?  It's not easy!  Especially when you don't do it often.  What happens when you meditate every day for a month? Do you think you get better or worse at the act of focusing on one thought?  What about thinking about a specific thought - like that of your passions, or an objective?  Do you think you could get better at thinking if you gave it time everyday? Just a little time!

In this day and age where the value of words is seemingly diminishing on one hand it is truly increasing on the other hand.  If you think that this sounds contradictory, well that's because it is!  But that is the nature of being human.  We are nuanced beings and we are not all the same.  While we all have the ability to say things we don't mean, we also have the ability to get goosebumps over song lyrics and derive energy and motivation from coaches, family and friends.  With so many words swirling around us all of the time which words are most important?  Really the first question is: "Where are the words coming from?"  Start by listening to the words you are using to describe your day.  When you find yourself using phraseology such as "I have to..." "I need to..." you may be unintentionally negatively impacting your day, your mentality, and thus your performance!
