☀️ The Sun. It's been there our entire lives, and most of us barely give it a second thought.

But when you really start learning about it, things get pretty ridiculous.

In this episode of Reality is Optional with Kris Rubio, I'm diving into one of the most fascinating objects in our solar system: THE SUN!

From its incredible size and extreme temperatures to solar flares, the energy it produces, and the fact that our entire existence depends on this giant ball of plasma, there's a lot to talk about.

And naturally, I've got some thoughts.

What would happen if the Sun disappeared? How dangerous are solar storms? How long will the Sun keep burning? And why do we spend so much time worrying about things on Earth when there's a massive nuclear fusion reactor sitting about 93 million miles away?

As usual, this isn't a science lecture or a traditional documentary review.

It's just me watching, learning, asking questions, making observations, sharing personal stories, and throwing in some comedy along the way.

Because sometimes reality is already stranger than anything we could imagine.

Welcome to Reality is Optional with Kris Rubio, where documentaries, science, history, movies, and everyday life turn into conversations, curiosity, personal stories, and comedy.

We mapped the human genome… and somehow it just gave us even more questions. 🧬

I watched a documentary about the human genome, and it sent me down a rabbit hole.

In this episode of Reality is Optional, I talk about DNA, why every person's genome is different, what makes us genetically unique, and the huge amount of our DNA that scientists once commonly referred to as “junk DNA.”

But is it actually junk?

The more we learn about the genome, the more complicated that question becomes. Some non-protein-coding DNA has important regulatory and structural functions, while scientists are still working to understand other regions.

As usual, this isn't a documentary review or a genetics class. It's me watching something fascinating and then talking through all the questions, observations, jokes, and random thoughts it puts into my head.

How can billions of humans be so similar genetically—and yet every one of us ends up different?

And if somebody tells me 98% of my DNA is junk, I'd at least like to know what it's been doing in there this whole time.

Welcome to Reality is Optional with Kris Rubio—where documentaries, science, history, movies, and everyday life turn into conversations, personal stories, curiosity, and comedy.

Living in Southern California means eventually the ground decides to remind you that you’re not actually in charge. In this episode of Reality is Optional, I’m talking about the earthquakes I’ve experienced over the years—what I did when they happened, what was going through my head, what I probably did completely wrong, and what I’d do differently when the next big one hits.Because apparently when the entire building starts moving, my brain doesn’t immediately become a trained emergency-response professional.Who knew?I’ll talk about my memories of previous earthquakes, how I reacted, what actually scared me, and how I’d prepare and respond differently today. And the biggest question:When everything starts shaking… what the hell are you actually supposed to do?!This isn't an earthquake-preparedness class. It's one guy who's lived through a few earthquakes trying to figure out whether he's learned anything from them.Welcome to Reality is Optional with Kris Rubio, where documentaries, experiences, science, history, and everyday life turn into stories, questions, observations, and comedy.Laughing Through Life... Why are humans so determined to explore Mars?

I watched a documentary about our decades-long attempt to understand the Red Planet—from satellites orbiting Mars to rovers driving across its surface and the bigger dream of eventually sending humans there.

But this isn't really a documentary review.

I'm talking about the parts that fascinated me, the things that made me laugh, the questions that popped into my head, and what all this effort says about us as humans.

We've sent machines millions of miles through space just so we can look around another planet.

And apparently that's still not enough.

So… are we actually going to Mars? 🚀

Welcome to Reality is Optional with Kris Rubio, where documentaries, movies, science, history, and random discoveries become conversations, personal stories, observations, and comedy.

What kind of person decides, “I'm going to follow wild bears around with a camera”?Today on Reality is Optional, I'm talking about a documentary following filmmakers as they track and document bears living on a remote island—and some of the situations these people put themselves in are insane. This isn't really a documentary review.
