Welcome to another episode of #RealTalk with Biha Care!

On this World Health Day 2021, our guest today is a psychologist who has assisted clients from various works of life to overcome a mirage of mental health challenges, Sharon Jepson-Emmanuel. She is a psychotherapist at Ndidi and also volunteers with the Stand to End Rape (STER) Initiative, where she provides therapy for survivors of Sexual & Gender Based Violence, and Obodo Nke where she is a Lead Support Group facilitator for the Anxiety Support Group. She is also a volunteer member of the Lagos COVID-19 Psychosocial Response Team, where she functioned as a frontline health worker during the pandemic, providing mental health care for survivors. She has vast experience in drug rehabilitation, stress management, trauma, crisis management, anxiety, depression, self-esteem development and a wide range of mental health challenges. She holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of Ibadan, a certified Psychological First Aider from John Hopkins University, trained in humanitarian outreach, empowerment and establishing peace from ATOP Meaningful World. She is also trained by the Lagos State Ministry of Health in Innovative Health Care. Sharon is vast and has experience working with people managing illness and walking them through the adjustment needed to be made to their lifestyles.

In this episode, we focus on the stigma surrounding Mental Health Illness and its prevalence in Nigeria (https://bit.ly/bfmentalhealth). We also dive into the possible triggers and risk factors that pose a threat to people with a predisposition to such challenges. We uncover actions and solutions that can be implemented in order to do better as a society to combat this issue.

There is continued neglect of mental health issues as well as the many challenges that results from it despite existing government policies in Nigeria. The rights of persons with mental disorders should be ensured by providing equal access to treatment and care, discouraging the stigma and discrimination and setting standards for psychiatric practice in Nigeria. Earlier this month, Sarah Everard disappeared while walking home after visiting a friend and her body was found a week later. This sparked an outcry for women’s safety. As the movement progressed, women across the world have inundated social media with posts describing their own experiences of walking the streets, with many sharing incidents when they had been catcalled, followed, harassed and experienced public indecency. Their stories highlight a burden shared by women to protect themselves, without a call for men to change their behaviour towards women. Ms. Everard’s case is now shedding a light on the insecurity that has plagued women on a daily basis, at home or in public spaces.

Two special guests, Princess Omonoseh and Kyangchat Zachariah, join Chinenye in a conversation that navigates through some of the issues faced by women in our society such as catcalling, common gender biases and sexual harassment. They share their personal experiences of objectification, stalking and coping mechanisms in light of constant danger and concern for safety. They also proffer solutions on how we can do better as a society to combat these issues.

Women shouldn’t have to feel self-conscious or nervous every time they head out the door or every time they pass by men on the street. What men need to understand is that catcalling is not cute, funny, or complimenting. It’s degrading and demeaning. It not only diminishes a woman's feelings of safety and comfort in public places, but also restricts her freedom of movement, depriving her of liberty and security in the public sphere. Women have the right to be treated with as much respect and dignity when walking down the street as any man. Women deserve to feel safe!

Welcome to another episode of #RealTalk with Biha Care!

We are joined today by Osasu Edobor, a social activist and gender advocate. She is the founder of THR Hub, a social enterprise using new media and technology solutions in helping women and girls break free, find shelter and recover from Sexual and Gender-Based Violence which includes domestic violence, trafficking and other types of exploitation. She is also the curator of the HERfessions app, an anonymous online platform that connects survivors of domestic and sexual violence to receive support and counselling.

In this episode, we focus on the stigma surrounding victims of domestic abuse in terms of ‘staying in’ or ‘leaving’ an abusive relationship. We also dive deep into the effects of abuse on the children in such relationships and the role of the church, government and society in such situations.

People who have been emotionally or physically abused are often depressed, drained, scared, ashamed, and confused. They need help getting out of their situation, yet their partner has often alienated them from their families and/or friends. By picking up on the warning signs and offering support, each of us can help put an end to the menace in our society!

Note: Victims are generally referred to as women in this episode. This does not in any way discredit the fact that men also experience some forms of abuse, but by nearly every measure women remain the overwhelming majority of domestic abuse victims.
