Wentworth letter, which explains how the Book of Mormon was supposed to “reveal” native American history.
An increase in baptism does not mean an increase in retention. And it certainly is not an indicator of truth. Responding to claims about “record baptisms” in the LDS church for 2025
Just like the SEC Case from a few years ago, the quiet release of the John Taylors 1886 revelation shows a pattern of calculated withholding and historical dishonesty.
Mormonism came forth in an environment where the origin and identity of indigenous populations was highly questioned. There were several books published between the 16th century and the 1830s that promoted the idea that Native Americans were either seafaring Jews or members of the lost 12 tribes. The Book of Mormon did not attempt to provide scientific or archaeological evidence. Joseph Smith presented the Book of Mormon as the proof of Native American history.
Increasingly over the years more and more Mormon leaders are using the term I promise to get people to stay invested in the church. And making a promise that you know you cannot deliver on and that you were ultimately not accountable for is unethical.
