“Rabbi Shimon’s opinion is worthy of relying upon during a pressing circumstance.” (Gittin 19a)
This is the reason that our sages declare that one cannot be appointed to the Sanhedrin unless he knows how to validly argue for the purity of an impure rodent (Sanhedrin 17a).
Ritva (Eruvin 13b):
“When Moses ascended to heaven [to receive the Torah], he was shown on each halakhic matter 49 aspects in favor of permitting and 49 aspects in favor of forbidding. Moses asked G-d, ’What is the meaning of this ambiguity?’ G-d replied, ‘This allows for it to be given over to the wisemen of each generation and the matter can be adjudicated in accordance with them.’ This is a fitting exposition on the level of derash. On the level of a emes, there is a secret reason.”
