Reciting Kaddish Before Hodu

Listen Later

Our custom is to recite "Kaddish Al Yisrael" just before the recitation of Hodu at the beginning of the morning Shaharit service. "Kaddish Al Yisrael" is to bes recited after Torah learning, and so we recite it here, at this point, right after we have recited the Berayta of Rabbi Yishmael and the "Ezehu Mekoman" chapter of Mishnayot. This sequence follows the teachings of the Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria, Safed, 1534-1572), who said that this Kaddish should be recited before Hodu. It occasionally happens that people come to the synagogue late, such that a Minyan is not present when it is time to begin Hodu. If somebody needs to recite Kaddish, and a Minyan has not yet arrived, the Kaddish may be delayed until after Hodu, and recited just before Baruch She'amar. When this happens, the Mishna of "Rabbi Hananya Ben Akashya Omer" should first be recited so that the "Kaddish Al Yisrael" can be recited after Torah learning. In such a case, when the Kaddish is delayed until after Hodu, it should be recited just before Baruch She'amar, after the pronouncement of "Hashem Melech, Hashem Malach, Hashem Yimloch Le'olam Va'ed." This ruling is corroborated by a story told that once, in the Minyan of the Rashash (Rav Shalom Sharabi, 1720-1777), the Kaddish was not recited before Hodu, and he instructed the congregation to recite it just before Baruch She'amar, after "Hashem Melech…" Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (Jerusalem, 1910-1995) ruled that when the Kaddish is recited before Baruch She'amar instead of before Hodu, then one should recite the standard Kaddish, instead of "Kaddish Al Yisrael," since it is not preceded by the Torah learning. Our custom, however, is to recite "Rabbi Hananya Ben Akshya Omer" followed by "Kaddish Al Yisrael," as discussed.
